In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

When Life Feels Too Heavy to Carry
There are moments when the weight feels unbearable. A loved one falls ill. A job disappears. A relationship breaks. A loss arrives without warning. In those moments, the natural question is: what do I say to Allah?
The Quran answers clearly. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah:
ููุง ุฃููููููุง ุงูููุฐูููู ุขู ููููุง ุงุณูุชูุนูููููุง ุจูุงูุตููุจูุฑู ููุงูุตููููุงุฉู
Ya ayyuhal-ladhina amanu ista'inu bis-sabri was-salah
"O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer." โ (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:153)
The Prophet (๏ทบ) did not just recite this โ he lived it. He taught us specific words to say when hardship arrives, so we are never left without a way to call on Allah. This is a collection of those authentic duas, with guidance on how to make them part of your daily life rather than a last resort.
For a broader collection of supplications, see our guide on dua for help in difficult situations.
The Core Duas for Difficult Times
The Dua That Makes Difficulty Easy
This supplication is for moments when a situation feels impossible โ when you cannot see a way forward:
ุงููููููู ูู ููุง ุณููููู ุฅููููุง ู ูุง ุฌูุนูููุชููู ุณูููููุง ููุฃูููุชู ุชูุฌูุนููู ุงููุญูุฒููู ุฅูุฐูุง ุดูุฆูุชู ุณูููููุง
Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahlan wa anta taj'alul-hazna idha shi'ta sahla
"O Allah, there is no ease except in what You have made easy, and You make difficulty easy when You will." โ (Ibn Hibban 3/255, from Anas ibn Malik)
This dua is a direct acknowledgment of a foundational truth: ease and difficulty both originate with Allah. Saying it is not passive resignation โ it is an active expression of tawakkul, trusting Allah's wisdom and power over your situation.
The Dua of Prophet Yunus
Among the most powerful supplications ever recorded is what Prophet Yunus (ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ) called out from inside the whale:
ููุง ุฅููููู ุฅููููุง ุฃููุชู ุณูุจูุญูุงูููู ุฅููููู ูููุชู ู ููู ุงูุธููุงููู ูููู
La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimin
"There is no god but You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers." โ (Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:87)
The Prophet (๏ทบ) said: "No Muslim calls upon Allah with these words for any matter except that Allah answers him." (Tirmidhi 3505) The beauty of this dua is its simplicity โ it begins with the declaration of tawhid, then moves to glorification of Allah, then to honest acknowledgment of one's own shortcomings. That combination, the scholars explain, is why it is so powerful.
The Comprehensive Dua Against Grief and Anxiety
The Prophet (๏ทบ) recited this dua consistently, especially in the morning and evening:
ุงููููููู ูู ุฅููููู ุฃูุนููุฐู ุจููู ู ููู ุงููููู ูู ููุงููุญูุฒููู ููุงููุนูุฌูุฒู ููุงููููุณููู ููุงููุจูุฎููู ููุงููุฌูุจููู ููุถูููุนู ุงูุฏูููููู ููุบูููุจูุฉู ุงูุฑููุฌูุงูู
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-bukhli wal-jubni, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal
"O Allah, I seek Your refuge from grief and sadness, from weakness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, and from being overwhelmed by debt and overpowered by people." โ (Sahih al-Bukhari 6369)
The fact that the Prophet (๏ทบ) made this dua habitually โ not only during specific crises โ teaches us something: protection from grief is built through regular, intentional supplication, not emergency requests.
What the Quran Promises About Hardship
One surah in the Quran repeats a single message twice in consecutive verses โ a level of emphasis that is rare even within the Quran itself:
ููุฅูููู ู ูุนู ุงููุนูุณูุฑู ููุณูุฑูุง ุฅูููู ู ูุนู ุงููุนูุณูุฑู ููุณูุฑูุง
"So verily, with hardship comes ease. Verily, with hardship comes ease." โ (Surah Ash-Sharh, 94:5-6)
The scholars of Arabic grammar noted something profound here: the word for "hardship" (al-'usr) carries the definite article โ it is one specific hardship. The word for "ease" (yusr) does not carry the definite article โ it refers to an unlimited, undefined ease. The implication is that every particular hardship carries within it a multiplicity of ease.
This is not empty comfort. It is a precise theological statement: the difficulty you face right now carries with it an ease you cannot yet see. Every prophet experienced this truth firsthand.
Allah also affirms in Surah Al-Baqarah: "Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear." (2:286) โ not because your situation is small, but because Allah knows your strength better than you do.
Making These Duas Part of Your Daily Life
The distance between knowing a dua and actually using it in a moment of crisis is significant. The way to close that gap is to build the habit before you need it.
Attach duas to existing prayers. The morning and evening adhkar are the most consistent anchor. Say the dua against grief (from Sahih al-Bukhari 6369) after Fajr and Maghrib. The Prophet (๏ทบ) particularly emphasized these two windows for remembrance.
Keep the dua of Prophet Yunus accessible. Write it on a card, set it as your phone lock screen, or memorize it in stages. When a moment of acute crisis hits, you want this dua already in your memory โ not something you need to search for.
Make dua in sujood. The prostration position is described by the Prophet (๏ทบ) as the closest a servant gets to Allah. Our article on how to make dua in sujood walks through this practice in detail.
Return to the Quran when it feels darkest. When you read Surah Ash-Sharh โ "with hardship comes ease" โ you are not just reciting words. You are reminding yourself of a direct promise from Allah. Our article on building a daily dua habit shows how to create a sustainable practice around this.

Common Questions
Can I make dua in English during difficult times?
Yes. Dua is a direct conversation with Allah, and He hears every language. While learning the Arabic duas the Prophet (๏ทบ) taught is valuable โ both for spiritual depth and connection to the tradition โ sincerity matters above all. You can begin in English and gradually add the Arabic as you learn.
How many times should I repeat a dua?
There is no mandatory number. The Prophet (๏ทบ) often repeated duas three times and made them consistently across different times of day. During a prolonged trial, saying a dua after each of the five prayers is a practice many scholars recommend. Consistency over time carries more weight than repetition in a single sitting.
Why does it feel like my dua is not being answered?
The Prophet (๏ทบ) taught that a sincere dua is never wasted. Allah either grants the request, averts an equivalent harm, or stores the reward for the hereafter (Ahmad 10752). The feeling that a dua is unanswered is often a signal to check the sincerity and consistency of the supplication โ not a sign of rejection.
What if I cannot focus during dua?
Start with whatever presence of heart you have. Even a distracted dua sincerely made is better than none. Working on khushu' โ focus and humility โ is a lifelong practice, not a prerequisite.
A Promise That Has Never Been Broken
Every prophet experienced hardship of a scale most of us cannot imagine. Ibrahim (ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ) was thrown into fire. Yunus (ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ) was swallowed by a whale. The Prophet Muhammad (๏ทบ) lost his wife, his children, his closest companions, and was driven from his home. And in each case, they turned to Allah with words โ specific, intentional, heartfelt words โ and Allah answered.
You have those same words. You have access to the same Allah. Say the dua today. Say it tomorrow. Say it in the moment you feel most alone. Every sincere call upon ุงููู โ Allah โ reaches Him, and He responds in ways that are better than what we could have planned for ourselves.

What is the best dua to say during difficult times?

Can I make dua in English during difficult times?
Yes. Dua can be made in any language you understand. The Prophet taught specific Arabic duas, and learning them is encouraged, but Allah hears every sincere heart regardless of language.
How many times should I repeat a dua for difficulty?
There is no fixed number. Many scholars recommend saying a dua three times or after each of the five daily prayers during a trial. Consistency and sincerity matter more than quantity.
What does Islam teach about why hardship exists?
