In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The last few minutes before sleep are underestimated. Most people end their day the same way they spent most of it โ scrolling, thinking, half-present. The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ modeled something different: a deliberate, unhurried closing of the day through a sequence of supplications that commit the night to Allah before surrendering to sleep.
The Islamic dua for sleeping is not a request for pleasant dreams. It is an act of tawakkul (ุชูููููู) โ placing your affairs entirely in the hands of Allah before you lose consciousness. Understanding the theology behind it transforms what could be a rote recitation into one of the most sincere moments of your day.
The Primary Dua for Sleeping
The dua for sleeping is narrated by Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman ุฑุถู ุงููู ุนูู, who reported that the Prophet ๏ทบ would say when he went to bed:
ุงููููููู ูู ุจูุงุณูู ููู ุฃูู ููุชู ููุฃูุญูููุง
Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya
"O Allah, with Your Name I die and I live." โ (Sahih al-Bukhari 6312)
The paired waking dua โ Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyaanaa ba'da maa amaatanaa (All praise is for Allah who gave us life after causing us to die) โ is said upon waking. Together, these two short supplications frame every night as a deliberate act of submission: you hand yourself over to Allah before sleep, and praise Him for returning you when you wake.
Say the sleeping dua while lying in bed, on your right side, just before closing your eyes. This is the established practice โ last action before sleep, not part of a pre-sleep routine done standing up.
The Quran itself provides the theological grounding. Allah says:
"And it is He who takes your souls by night and knows what you have committed by day. Then He revives you therein that a specified term may be fulfilled. Then to Him will be your return; then He will inform you about what you used to do." โ (Surah Al-An'am, 6:60, quran.com)
Sleep is a nightly surrender of the soul to Allah. The sleeping dua names that reality consciously: bismika โ in Your name. Not passively drifting off, but actively placing yourself under His care.
The Complete Sunnah Bedtime Routine
The Prophet ๏ทบ did not only teach the one-line sleeping dua. He gave a more complete routine, recorded in the narration of Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib ุฑุถู ุงููู ุนูู. The Prophet instructed him:
"When you lie down to sleep, perform ablution as for prayer, then lie on your right side. Then say:
"O Allah, I submit myself to You, I turn my face to You, I entrust my affairs to You, and I press my back against You, out of hope and fear of You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You revealed and in Your Prophet whom You sent." โ (Sahih Muslim 2710)
The Prophet ๏ทบ then said: "If you die that night, you will die upon fitra (the natural Islamic disposition). Make these the last words you say."
This is not a short dua โ it is a full surrender. Every phrase is an act of giving something back to Allah: your soul, your direction, your affairs, your support, your trust. The routine that includes wudu, lying on the right side, and this supplication constitutes the complete Sunnah bedtime practice.
The Protective Recitations Before Sleep
Alongside the bedtime duas, the Prophet ๏ทบ taught a set of protective recitations โ the three Quls โ done in a specific way. 'Aisha ุฑุถู ุงููู ุนููุง narrated:
"Every night when the Prophet ๏ทบ went to bed, he would cup his hands together, blow into them, and recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas. He would then wipe his hands over as much of his body as he could, beginning with his head, face, and the front of his body. He did this three times." โ (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017)
These three surahs cover the full range of seeking Allah's protection: from His own perfection, from the evil of created things, from the evil of the night, from dark arts, and from the whispers of Shaytan. Reciting them before sleep is among the most consistent practices narrated about the Prophet.
Our article on dua for nightmares covers what to do when these protective recitations are paired with a disturbing dream โ including the prophetic response for waking from a bad dream in the middle of the night.
Making the Bedtime Routine Your Own
The challenge is not knowing what to say โ it is building the routine when you are tired, when the day ran long, when your mind is still running. A few approaches that work:
Start with one dua. If the full Al-Bara' dua feels like too much on tired nights, begin with just the short Hudhayfah dua: Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya. One line, said while lying on your right side. That is the minimum viable Sunnah bedtime practice. Build from there.
Put your phone down ten minutes earlier. The most common reason people miss the bedtime adhkar is that they are still on their phone when sleep overtakes them. Creating a simple boundary โ phone down, lights low โ gives the routine a chance.
Link the wudu to the routine. Performing wudu before bed resets the physical state and creates a clear transition from the day into the night. When wudu becomes part of the pre-sleep routine, the duas follow naturally โ because you already signaled that the day is ending.
Recite in sequence. A complete bedtime sequence might look like: wudu โ lie on right side โ three Quls (three times each with wiping) โ Ayatul Kursi โ last two verses of Al-Baqarah โ Al-Bara' dua โ short Hudhayfah dua. That entire sequence takes under five minutes for someone who knows the material. For someone learning, start with the short dua and add pieces over weeks.
For a broader picture of how daily duas โ morning and evening โ fit together into a Muslim's life, daily duas for Muslim life provides the full framework. And for those who want to connect the bedtime routine to waking early, our dua for waking up is the natural companion piece โ covering the first words of the day as these cover the last.

If you wake at night for Tahajjud: The bedtime routine connects directly to the practice of Tahajjud โ waking before Fajr for voluntary night prayer. Many Muslims find that a consistent bedtime supplication routine leads to more spiritually settled sleep and more natural early waking. Our guide to Tahajjud night prayer covers the complete practice, including the specific dua for waking at night.
For ongoing nighttime protection: The Deen Back guide to Tahajjud and night prayer explores how regular nighttime worship reshapes the soul's relationship with sleep โ from something we simply endure to something we use intentionally.

Common Questions
Can I say the sleeping dua if I am not sure I will stay awake long enough to finish? Yes โ and this is the point. The short Hudhayfah dua is intentionally brief. You say it while lying down, and it is effective even if sleep overtakes you within seconds. This is by design: the Prophet ๏ทบ chose a dua that works with the human reality of bedtime tiredness.
What if I fall asleep on the couch before going to bed? If you wake up and move to bed, say the dua when you lie down again. If you sleep on the couch and wake in the morning without having gone to bed, say the waking dua upon rising. The goal is presence and intention wherever possible, not perfection about location.
Is Ayatul Kursi the most important bedtime recitation? Ayatul Kursi is one of the strongest individual protections in the Sunnah โ the hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah in Sahih al-Bukhari 2311 confirms that reciting it before sleep means Allah appoints a guardian who keeps Shaytan away until morning. Scholars include it as one of the highest-priority recitations in the bedtime routine.
My children fall asleep very quickly. How do I teach them the bedtime dua? Start by saying it aloud with them while they are lying down โ even if they drift off before finishing. Children absorb routine and language through repetition. The short dua โ Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya โ is the right starting point: short enough to complete even on the sleepiest nights, meaningful enough to carry through a lifetime.
The Night as an Act of Worship
The Sunnah bedtime routine transforms sleep from passive disconnection into an active act of faith. Every element โ the wudu, the position, the supplications, the protective recitations โ is a choice to close the day with Allah rather than with a screen or scattered thoughts.
The Prophet ๏ทบ did not teach this routine as a checklist. He taught it as a way of being: surrendering each night to the One who holds the souls, trusting that if you wake, it is by His grace, and if you do not, you left in a state of iman.
Build it one dua at a time. Start tonight with the short Hudhayfah dua. Add the three Quls next. Over a few weeks, the full routine becomes the natural end of every day.

What is the dua for sleeping in Islam?
The primary sleeping dua is: Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya โ O Allah, with Your Name I die and I live. Narrated by Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman and recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari 6312. Say it while lying on your right side before closing your eyes.
What is the Sunnah sleeping position?
The Sunnah is to sleep on the right side. This is mentioned alongside the bedtime supplication in Sahih al-Bukhari, where the Prophet instructed performing wudu, lying on the right side, and then reciting the sleeping dua before closing your eyes.
What if I fall asleep before finishing my bedtime adhkar?
If you fall asleep mid-adhkar, scholars consider this a positive state โ you fell asleep in remembrance of Allah. The goal is to begin the routine consistently. Finishing is secondary to starting, and the habit deepens over time even on tired nights.
Do I need to perform wudu before sleeping?
Performing wudu before sleep is a confirmed Sunnah. The Prophet instructed Al-Bara ibn Azib to perform wudu as part of the complete bedtime routine. It is not obligatory but is a highly recommended practice that the Prophet maintained consistently.
