In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Among all the voluntary fasts in Islam, fasting on the Day of Arafah stands in a category of its own. The reward attached to a single day's fast is unlike almost anything else in the Islamic year: two years of sins expiated โ the year before and the year ahead. That is the direct statement of the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ, recorded in the most authenticated collections of hadith. Yet for many Muslims, this extraordinary opportunity passes each year without them realizing what they could have gained.
Yawm Arafah โ the Day of Arafah โ falls on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar. For pilgrims performing Hajj, it is the pinnacle of their journey. For the rest of us around the world, it is an open invitation to one of the most spiritually significant single acts of worship in a lifetime.
What the Day of Arafah Actually Is
The Day of Arafah takes its name from the plain of Arafah outside the holy city of Mecca. On this day, pilgrims performing Hajj gather at that plain from noon until sunset in an act of collective worship, prayer, and supplication known as wuquf โ the standing. It is the heart of the Hajj pilgrimage.
For more about the full spiritual significance of this day and its connection to Hajj, see our detailed guide to the Day of Arafah.
For those not on Hajj, the 9th of Dhul Hijjah is still an extraordinarily blessed day. The Prophet ๏ทบ described the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah as among the best days of the entire year. Allah swears by them in the Quran:
ููุงููููุฌูุฑู ููููููุงูู ุนูุดูุฑู
"By the dawn, and by the ten nights." โ (Surah Al-Fajr, 89:1โ2)
Most scholars of Quran interpretation hold that "the ten nights" refers to the first ten nights of Dhul Hijjah โ a period that culminates in the Day of Arafah on the ninth and Eid al-Adha on the tenth.
The Immense Reward of Fasting on the Day of Arafah
Abu Qatadah al-Ansari reported that the Messenger of Allah ๏ทบ was asked about fasting on the Day of Arafah. He replied:
ูููููููุฑู ุงูุณููููุฉู ุงููู ูุงุถูููุฉู ููุงูุณููููุฉู ุงููู ูุณูุชูููุจูููุฉู
"It expiates the sins of the preceding year and the coming year." โ (Sahih Muslim 1162)
This is one of the most generous divine gifts available in the Islamic calendar โ and it is open to every Muslim who is not performing Hajj that year. A single day's fast clears the record of the past year and provides spiritual cover for the year ahead.
Scholars clarify an important nuance: this expiation applies to minor sins. Major sins (kaba'ir) require sincere tawbah โ turning back to Allah with genuine regret โ and, where applicable, making right with those who were wronged. But for the accumulation of everyday shortcomings that all of us carry, this fast offers a powerful reset.
Fasting itself is deeply connected to the purification of the soul. Allah says:
"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous." โ (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:183)

How to Observe the Day of Arafah Fast
For those not on Hajj, fasting on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah is simple and follows the same principles as any Islamic fast.
Confirm the date
The Day of Arafah depends on the Hijri calendar and regional moon sighting. Islamic centers announce the date in advance each year. Check with your local mosque or a trusted Islamic calendar resource to confirm the exact date, which can vary by one day between countries based on moon sighting.
Make your niyyah
Set your intention the night before or before Fajr on the day itself:
ููููููุชู ุตูููู ู ููููู ู ุนูุฑูููุฉู ููููููู ุชูุนูุงููู
"I intend to fast the Day of Arafah for the sake of Allah the Exalted."
The importance of niyyah is foundational. A sincere intention transforms the physical act of not eating into a conscious act of worship directed entirely toward Allah.
Eat a pre-dawn suhoor
A light meal before Fajr is Sunnah and helps sustain you through the day. Even dates and water is sufficient โ and the act of waking early for suhoor is itself rewarded. Our suhoor and iftar guide has practical advice on what to eat and how to prepare.
Fill the day with additional worship
Fasting on Arafah is most powerful when the day is filled with other acts of worship. Scholars recommend:
- Extended dua, especially from noon until sunset โ mirroring the timing of the pilgrims' wuquf at the plain of Arafah
- Increased dhikr and istighfar (seeking forgiveness)
- Reading and reflecting on Quran
- Giving sadaqah (voluntary charity)
- Sending salawat on the Prophet ๏ทบ

The Connection to Fasting Throughout the Year
Fasting on Arafah does not stand alone. It is part of a broader Sunnah of voluntary fasting that the Prophet ๏ทบ maintained throughout the year. Beyond Arafah, the most significant voluntary fasts include the six days of Shawwal, the Monday and Thursday Sunnah fast, and the three white days each lunar month.
Our guide to fasting six days of Shawwal covers another significant voluntary fast โ one the Prophet described as equivalent to fasting the entire year when combined with Ramadan. Together with Arafah fasting, these practices create a rhythm of voluntary worship that keeps the spirit of Ramadan alive across all twelve months.

Common Questions About Fasting on Arafah
Can people on Hajj fast on the Day of Arafah?
No. The Prophet ๏ทบ did not fast on Arafah while on Hajj (Sahih Bukhari 1988), and scholars are in agreement that pilgrims should not fast that day. The exertion of the pilgrimage and the need to remain strong for wuquf and supplication make fasting inadvisable. The Arafah fast is specifically for those not performing Hajj that year.
What if the Day of Arafah falls during my menstrual period?
Women in their menstrual period are excused from fasting and cannot fast on Arafah that year. However, they can engage in all other acts of worship โ dua, dhikr, sadaqah, and Quran recitation โ and Allah rewards sincere effort regardless.
Is fasting on Arafah better than fasting on Ashura?
Both fasts are confirmed Sunnah, but they differ in reward. Fasting on Arafah expiates sins of two years โ the preceding and the coming year. Fasting on Ashura (10th of Muharram) expiates the preceding year only. Both carry great merit, and neither cancels or diminishes the other.
Can I combine a Monday or Thursday fast with the Arafah fast?
Yes. If the Day of Arafah falls on a Monday or Thursday โ which happens from time to time โ you can make a combined intention and receive the reward of both. Many scholars hold that multiple sincere intentions made in a single act of worship are each rewarded separately.
Preparing Your Heart for Arafah
The physical fast is the frame; the spiritual filling is what makes Arafah transformative. The pilgrims at the plain of Arafah spend their afternoon in earnest supplication, weeping, and hope. Those of us fasting at home can mirror that spirit wherever we are.
Before the day arrives, take a few minutes to reflect on what you want to ask Allah for and what you hope to leave behind. Make a list of duas you want to offer, shortcomings you want forgiven, and goodness you want to ask for in the coming year. Then fast โ and pray as though the day matters, because it does.
