In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A pre-dawn sky with a faint glow on the horizon, representing the blessed time of fajr prayer

Fajr is the hardest of the five daily prayers to pray on time. It is also, by the weight of authentic hadith, among the most rewarding. Most Muslims who struggle with it do not lack the desire โ€” they lack a working system.

This guide covers exactly how to pray fajr, what makes it spiritually distinct, and practical ways to wake up for it consistently โ€” without guilt and without pressure.

Why Fajr Holds Such a High Place in Islam

Allah singles out the dawn prayer in the Quran with a striking description:

"Establish prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night, and [also] the recitation of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed." โ€” (Surah Al-Isra, 17:78)

Scholars of tafsir explain that "witnessed" means the angels of the night and the angels of the day both gather at fajr. The Prophet (peace be upon him) confirmed this: "Angels come to you in succession by night and by day, and they all assemble at the time of fajr prayer and asr prayer." (Sahih al-Bukhari 555)

The reward for praying fajr consistently is described in one of the most quoted hadith on the subject: "Whoever prays the two cool prayers (bardayn) will enter Paradise." (Sahih al-Bukhari 574) The bardayn refers to fajr and asr โ€” the prayers that bracket the working hours of the day.

And perhaps most powerfully: "Whoever prays fajr is under the protection of Allah." (Sahih Muslim 657)

Starting the day under divine protection is not a small thing. For a broader look at how daily prayer fits within the pillars of Islamic life, see our complete guide to how to pray salah.

How to Pray Fajr: Step by Step

Fajr consists of four rakats in total: 2 sunnah rakats followed by 2 obligatory (fard) rakats. Here is how each is performed.

The 2 Sunnah Rakats of Fajr

The Prophet (peace be upon him) never missed the 2 sunnah rakats of fajr โ€” not while traveling, not at home. He described them as "better than the world and everything in it." (Sahih Muslim 725)

Pray them lightly and quickly. The Prophet (peace be upon him) would recite Surah Al-Kafirun in the first rakat and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second. (Sahih Muslim 727) This makes them short but complete.

Structure:

  1. Stand facing qibla. Make your intention for the 2 sunnah rakats of fajr.
  2. Say Allahu Akbar (opening takbir), fold hands, recite Al-Fatihah, then a short surah.
  3. Bow (ruku): say Subhana Rabbiyal Adhim three times.
  4. Rise: say Sami Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana lakal hamd.
  5. Prostrate (sujud): say Subhana Rabbiyal A'la three times.
  6. Sit briefly, then prostrate again.
  7. Rise for the second rakat. Repeat steps 2โ€“6.
  8. After the second sujud, sit for the final tashahud, then complete with the two tasleem (salutations).

The 2 Fard Rakats of Fajr

The fard rakats follow the same basic structure as above, with two differences.

First, the recitation is longer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) would recite 60 to 100 verses during the fard of fajr โ€” making it the longest of the five daily prayers in terms of Quran recitation. (Sahih al-Bukhari 771) You do not need to match that exactly, but reciting longer surahs than you would at dhuhr or asr is the Sunnah.

Second, if praying in congregation, follow the imam. You do not recite Al-Fatihah aloud โ€” the imam recites on behalf of the congregation. If you arrive late, join wherever the imam is.

The imam will recite Al-Fatihah and a surah aloud in both rakats of fajr. This is part of what makes fajr feel different โ€” the audible Quran in the stillness of dawn is something the scholars describe as one of the most moving experiences in Islamic worship.

For guidance on the duas associated with each prayer, including what to say after salah, see our guide to daily duas in Muslim life.

Building the Habit of Waking for Fajr

Wanting to pray fajr is different from waking up for it. Here is what actually works.

Sleep at a time that makes fajr possible. If fajr is at 5:00 AM and you sleep at 2:00 AM, willpower alone will not save you. Isha is prayed at night for a reason โ€” protecting the next morning is part of honoring the prayer structure Islam gives us. The companions were known to sleep immediately after Isha and rise for fajr without alarm.

Make wudu before bed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged sleeping in a state of purity. Doing so also means you have one less step between waking and prayer โ€” which matters when you are half-awake at dawn.

Set your alarm with intention. Place your phone across the room if you need to. Set two alarms. Make the first one your commitment alarm and the second a five-minute safety net. What matters most is not the technology โ€” it is what you tell yourself when the alarm sounds.

When you wake, the first thing to say is:

"All praise is for Allah who gave us life after having taken it from us, and unto Him is the resurrection." โ€” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6312)

This dua reorients you immediately. You woke up. Allah gave you another morning. The prayer that follows is the natural response.

Remind yourself of what is unique about fajr. The adhan at fajr contains a phrase heard at no other prayer:

ุงู„ุตูŽู‘ู„ุงูŽุฉู ุฎูŽูŠู’ุฑูŒ ู…ูู†ูŽ ุงู„ู†ูŽู‘ูˆู’ู…ู

"As-salatu khayrun min an-nawm" โ€” "Prayer is better than sleep."

That call has been sounded at dawn for over 1,400 years across every Muslim community on earth. When you hear it, you are part of something ancient and continuous.

Common Fajr Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping the sunnah rakats to "save time." The 2 sunnah rakats of fajr take under three minutes. The Prophet (peace be upon him) never skipped them. Making them a non-negotiable part of your fajr routine is one of the most rewarding habits you can build.

Reciting too quickly in the fard. Fajr is the prayer for slow, present recitation. The night is ending, the day has not started โ€” there is nowhere to rush to. Let the Quran land.

Missing congregation without good reason. The scholars have said that a man who regularly prays fajr in the masjid has testified to his Islam with his feet. Congregation is not always possible, but when it is, the reward is 27 times greater. (Sahih al-Bukhari 645)

Treating make-up (qada) as equivalent to on-time prayer. Making up a missed fajr is an obligation, but it does not carry the same spiritual weight as praying on time. Use missed prayers as motivation to fix the system, not as a comfort to delay it.

Fajr as the Foundation of the Day

Every day you pray fajr on time, you begin from a position of connection with Allah. That is not a small thing. It shapes the character of the hours that follow in ways that are difficult to measure but easy to feel.

The scholars say that the one who guards the fajr prayer guards his deen. The one who loses the fajr prayer has lost something that only consistent effort can recover โ€” not guilt, not regret, but simply showing up again tomorrow.

If you want to strengthen the spiritual backbone of your day beyond fajr, our guide to making dua properly covers the supplications that turn every moment โ€” from waking to sleeping โ€” into an act of remembrance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time does fajr start and end?

Fajr begins at true dawn (subh sadiq), when a horizontal white light spreads across the horizon. It ends at sunrise. Times vary by location and season โ€” use a local prayer timetable.

Should I pray the 2 sunnah rakats before the fajr fard?

Yes โ€” the 2 sunnah rakats of fajr are strongly emphasized. The Prophet said they are better than the world and all it contains. Missing them occasionally is not sinful, but regular neglect is strongly disliked.

What if I miss fajr and wake up after sunrise?

Pray it as soon as you wake and remember. The Prophet instructed that missed prayers be made up immediately upon remembering. There is no kaffarah (expiation) required โ€” just make it up without delay.

How many rakats is fajr prayer in total?

Fajr consists of 4 rakats: 2 sunnah rakats prayed before or shortly after the adhan, and 2 obligatory (fard) rakats. Praying in congregation at the masjid is strongly recommended for the fard.
