Eid morning arrives with a particular energy. The streets fill before dawn, the air carries the sound of takbeers, and the community gathers in a way that happens only twice a year. At the centre of it all is Salatul Eid — the Eid prayer — which many Muslims have prayed since childhood yet rarely had someone walk them through step by step.

Whether you are praying Salatul Eid for the first time, returning after a long absence, or simply want to perform it with full understanding, this guide gives you everything you need: the correct number of rakats, the extra takbeers, what to recite between them, and how the prayer differs from your daily salah.

How Do You Pray Salatul Eid?

Salatul Eid (صَلَاةُ الْعِيد) is a 2-rakah congregational prayer performed on the morning of Eid al-Fitr (1 Shawwal) and Eid al-Adha (10 Dhul Hijjah). The first rakah contains 7 extra takbeers before Surah Al-Fatihah; the second contains 5. There is no adhan or iqamah. The prayer is followed by two khutbahs. Its ruling ranges from wajib (obligatory) in the Hanafi school to sunnah mu'akkadah (strongly confirmed sunnah) in the Maliki and Shafi'i schools.

Why Salatul Eid Matters

The Prophet ﷺ never missed Salatul Eid in his life and instructed the entire community — men, women, and children — to attend. The command is recorded clearly:

"We were ordered to come out on Eid day, even the young women and menstruating women, so that they might witness the goodness and the supplication of the Muslims. As for those who were menstruating, they would stand apart from the prayer." — (Sahih al-Bukhari 324)

This is not a prayer only for the religiously advanced. It is the gathering of the whole ummah, a living expression of the Quranic verse:

"And complete the fast until nightfall, and say the takbeer of Allah for having guided you, that you may be grateful." — (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:185)

The takbeers of Eid — Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa lillahil hamd — are an act of communal gratitude, completing the month of Ramadan or marking the days of Dhul Hijjah with praise.

Step-by-Step: How to Pray Salatul Eid

Before You Begin

Arrive at the prayer ground (or mosque) having made ghusl (full ritual bath), worn your best clean clothes, applied perfume (men only), and eaten before the prayer for Eid al-Fitr (following the Sunnah) or withheld from eating for Eid al-Adha until after the prayer and the sacrifice.

The congregation gathers and stands in rows. The imam faces the qiblah. There is no adhan and no iqamah — the prayer begins when the imam is ready.

Rakah One

1. Opening Niyyah (intention) Silently intend to pray Salatul Eid — two rakats — for the sake of Allah.

2. Opening Takbeer (Takbiratul Ihram) The imam says Allahu Akbar and raises both hands to the earlobes. Follow the imam. This takbeer enters you into the prayer.

3. Seven Extra Takbeers The imam says six more takbeers (making seven total, including the opening), each time raising the hands. Follow each one. Between each extra takbeer, the recommended dhikr is:

سُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَاللهُ أَكْبَرُ

Subhanallah wal-hamdulillah wa la ilaha illallah wallahu akbar

"Glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the greatest."

4. Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah The imam recites Al-Fatihah aloud followed by a surah. The Prophet ﷺ often recited Surah Al-A'la (87) in the first rakah of Eid prayer (Sahih Muslim 878). Listen attentively.

5. Ruku, sujud, and sitting Complete the remainder of the rakah as you would any prayer: bow (ruku'), prostrate twice (sujud), and sit briefly before standing.

Rakah Two

6. Standing for the second rakah Rise and stand. The imam says five extra takbeers now, before reciting Al-Fatihah. Follow each one, raising your hands and reciting the dhikr between takbeers.

7. Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah The imam recites Al-Fatihah aloud followed by a surah. The Prophet ﷺ often recited Surah Al-Ghashiyah (88) in the second rakah (Sahih Muslim 878).

8. Ruku, sujud, tashahhud, and tasleem Complete the rakah fully: bow, prostrate twice, sit for tashahhud, and end with tasleem (turning to the right and left saying Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah).

After the Prayer: The Khutbah

The imam delivers two khutbahs after the prayer. Attending and listening is a sunnah strongly encouraged by the Prophet ﷺ. Unlike the Friday khutbah (which comes before the prayer), the Eid khutbah comes after — and the prayer remains valid whether or not you stay for it.

Building the Habit of Praying Every Eid

Some Muslims find themselves consistently missing Salatul Eid or arriving late. A few practical steps that help:

Know your local prayer location and time in advance. Most cities have multiple Eid congregations — find the one nearest to you before the night before Eid, not on the morning itself.

Follow the Sunnah preparation the night before. The night of Eid is a night of ibadah. Reciting takbeers from sunset on the eve of Eid al-Adha, performing ghusl the night before, and laying out your best clothes removes the chaos of the morning.

Bring children. The Prophet ﷺ brought even small children to the Eid prayer ground. The experience of seeing the whole community gathered in rows is something that stays with a child for life.

Reconnect after the prayer. The conversation and embraces after Salatul Eid are part of its spirit. Staying for the khutbah and then greeting fellow Muslims — "Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum" (may Allah accept from us and from you) — completes the act of worship.

Common Mistakes in Salatul Eid

Confusing the extra takbeer count

The most common mistake is losing count of the extra takbeers. Remember: seven in the first rakah (including the opening takbeer, which means six after it), five in the second (before Al-Fatihah). If you lose track, follow the imam and make a judgment — the extra takbeers are sunnah, not fard, and missing one does not invalidate the prayer.

Leaving before the khutbah

Some worshippers leave immediately after the prayer ends. While the khutbah is not obligatory, leaving immediately misses a key part of the communal experience the Prophet ﷺ established. If you must leave, do so quietly.

Not making wudu at home

Eid prayer locations fill quickly and bathroom facilities may be limited. Make wudu before leaving the house and perform ghusl the night before to arrive in a state of purity without rushing.

Praying nafl prayers before Salatul Eid

It is established in the Sunnah that the Prophet ﷺ did not pray any voluntary (nafl) prayers before Salatul Eid at the prayer ground. Wait until after the prayer for any optional salah.

Common Questions About How to Pray Salatul Eid

Can I pray Salatul Eid at home if I cannot attend the congregation?

If attendance is genuinely impossible due to illness, disability, or unavoidable circumstances, the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools permit praying individually or in a small household group at home. The Hanafi school generally does not recognize this as a valid substitute. Follow your madhab's ruling or ask a local scholar.

What if I join the prayer late and miss some extra takbeers?

Join the prayer wherever the imam is and follow along from that point. Make up the missed portion according to your madhab's guidance. Missing extra takbeers does not invalidate the prayer — they are sunnah additions, and the core two-rakah structure is what carries the prayer's validity.

Do I recite anything different in the extra takbeers?

Each extra takbeer itself is simply Allahu Akbar — the same as any other takbeer in prayer. The dhikr recited between the extra takbeers is sunnah but not obligatory: Subhanallah wal-hamdulillah wa la ilaha illallah wallahu akbar.

Is Salatul Eid valid if prayed before the Eid khutbah?

Yes. The prayer itself is valid before the khutbah — in fact, the prayer always precedes the khutbah in the Eid Sunnah. The khutbah is a separate act of worship that follows the prayer, not a precondition for its validity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rakats is Salatul Eid?

Salatul Eid consists of 2 rakats. The first rakah includes 7 extra takbeers before Surah Al-Fatihah (after the opening takbeer). The second rakah includes 5 extra takbeers before Surah Al-Fatihah. The prayer is followed by two khutbahs (sermons), which are sunnah to attend and listen to.

Is Salatul Eid obligatory or sunnah?

Hanafi scholars consider Salatul Eid wajib (obligatory) for every Muslim who can attend, citing the Prophet's consistent practice. Maliki and Shafi'i scholars classify it as sunnah mu'akkadah (a strongly confirmed sunnah). All four madhabs agree it is among the most important communal prayers of the Islamic year.

What time is Salatul Eid prayed?

Salatul Eid begins after the sun has risen approximately 15-20 minutes above the horizon and continues until just before Zuhr (midday) prayer time. Eid al-Fitr prayer is recommended to be delayed slightly while Eid al-Adha prayer is recommended to be prayed as early as possible.

Is there adhan or iqamah for Salatul Eid?

No. Salatul Eid has neither adhan nor iqamah. This is established by the Sunnah and agreed upon across all four major madhabs. The congregation gathers and the imam begins directly with the opening takbeer. Any call you hear near the mosque is for orientation, not a formal adhan.

Can women pray Salatul Eid?

Yes. The Prophet ﷺ specifically instructed that women — including those who were menstruating and could not pray — should attend the Eid prayer ground to witness the gathering and join in the takbeers and dua (Sahih al-Bukhari 324). Attending is encouraged for all Muslim women who are able.

What do I recite in the extra takbeers of Salatul Eid?

Between each extra takbeer, recite Subhanallah wal-hamdulillah wa la ilaha illallah wallahu akbar — Glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the greatest. This is the recommended dhikr between takbeers according to the majority of scholars.

What if I miss the start of Salatul Eid?

If you join the prayer after it has begun, follow the imam from wherever he is and complete what you missed according to your madhhab's guidance. If you miss the congregational prayer entirely, the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools permit making it up individually or in a small group, while the Hanafi school generally does not.
