Istikhara dua for marriage — guidance and supplication in Islam

Marriage is one of the most significant decisions a Muslim makes in their lifetime. When hearts are involved and futures are uncertain, the instinct to seek guidance from Allah — the One who knows what we cannot — is exactly right. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us a specific way to do that: salat al-istikhara, the prayer of seeking guidance, followed by a dua that opens the decision entirely to Allah's wisdom. This guide walks through the istikhara dua for marriage with complete accuracy, practical instruction, and the theological grounding that makes this practice so powerful.

What Is the Istikhara Dua for Marriage?

The istikhara dua for marriage is the supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ in Sahih al-Bukhari (1162), prayed specifically to ask Allah whether a particular marriage is good for you in your religion and your worldly life. It is recited after two non-obligatory rakahs of salah. The dua asks Allah to ordain the marriage if it is beneficial, or to distance you from it — and from it from you — if it is harmful. You hold the intention of this specific marriage in your heart as you recite it.

The Complete Istikhara Dua

Recite these words after completing two rakahs of non-obligatory prayer. When you reach the phrase "this matter," hold in your heart the intention of this marriage:

Transliteration:

Translation:

"O Allah, I seek Your counsel by Your knowledge and by Your power I seek strength and I ask You from Your immense favour; for You are able while I am not, and You know while I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion and in my life and for my welfare in the life to come, then ordain it for me and make it easy for me, then bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion and in my life and for my welfare in the life to come, then distance it from me and distance me from it, and ordain for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me pleased with it."

How to Pray Istikhara for Marriage

Istikhara for marriage follows the same structure as istikhara for any decision. Allah says in the Quran: "And your Lord says, 'Call upon Me; I will respond to you'" (Surah Ghafir, 40:60). This dua is the formal, prophetic way to make that call for one of life's biggest choices.

StepWhat to DoNotes
1. PurifyMake wudu and pray in a clean spaceSame as any salah
2. IntentionIntend two rakahs of non-obligatory prayer for istikharaSay it in your heart before you begin
3. Pray two rakahsAny two surahs after Al-Fatihah are permissibleAvoid during prohibited prayer times
4. After tashahhudRecite the istikhara dua before taslim, or afterBoth positions are valid per scholars
5. Make the intentionHold this specific marriage in your heart at "hadha al-amr"You do not need to name the person aloud
6. Trust and proceedMove forward with what your heart inclines towardYou do not wait for a dream

The most common misconception about istikhara for marriage is that you must receive a dream or a sign before acting. Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and other scholars clarify: what follows the prayer matters more than what appears during sleep. For a detailed scholarly explanation, SeekersGuidance's guide to istikhara is one of the most thorough resources available in English. If the path becomes easier — the family accepts, the conversations go well, no major obstacles arise — that is how istikhara is answered, not necessarily through visions.

Why Istikhara for Marriage Is Different from Other Decisions

Marriage is the one commitment the Quran calls a mithaqan ghaliza — a solemn covenant (Surah An-Nisa, 4:21). The weight of that word matters. You are not asking Allah to help you choose between two career offers; you are asking Him to guide you toward the person who will help you or hinder you in your journey to Him. That is why scholars encourage being especially thorough with istikhara in marriage: seeking righteous counsel, investigating character and compatibility, and making the dua with full presence of heart rather than as a checkbox.

The Prophet ﷺ also said: "Whoever among you wants to propose marriage to a woman, if he can look at her to see what will encourage him to marry her, let him do so" (Abu Dawud 2082). Investigation and istikhara work together — one informs the mind, the other surrenders the outcome to Allah.

Making Istikhara Part of a Larger Marriage Supplication Practice

Istikhara is the most authoritative dua for marriage decisions, but it sits inside a wider practice of supplication. Many Muslims combine it with other authentic duas during the deliberation period.

For guidance through any uncertainty, the dua for guidance from the prophetic tradition is a natural companion to istikhara. Before making istikhara, it helps to be grounded in how to make dua properly so your heart is truly present for the prayer. And if you are asking Allah for a specific type of spouse, the dua for a good spouse draws directly on Quranic supplications for righteous partners.

The DeenBack guide to building a morning dua routine is a helpful resource for weaving istikhara into a wider morning supplication practice — especially during the days you are repeating the prayer. And the Demi Manifest piece on tawakkul in daily life addresses the inner posture that must accompany any istikhara: genuine surrender of the outcome to Allah's wisdom.

For the Quranic dua for a righteous family: رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا — "Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous" (Surah Al-Furqan, 25:74). This dua can be recited regularly through the process and into marriage itself.

Signs of an Answered Istikhara for Marriage

Scholars across the four madhabs agree: there is no single prescribed sign. What you watch for after istikhara for marriage is the movement of circumstances, not the contents of dreams. Ease — the path opening, the family willing, your own heart settling — is a positive indication. Difficulty — obstacles compounding, your heart growing more troubled despite trying, the situation unraveling — may be Allah's answer in the other direction.

The hadith's closing phrase is significant: thumma ardini bihi — "then make me pleased with it." You are not just asking for what is good; you are asking for the grace to be content with whatever Allah decrees. That is the real work of istikhara: not prediction, but surrender.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the istikhara dua for marriage?

The istikhara dua for marriage is the same dua the Prophet ﷺ taught for all decisions (Sahih al-Bukhari 1162): you ask Allah to ordain this marriage if it is good for your deen and dunya, or to avert it if it is harmful. You insert the specific intention — this marriage — into the prayer and then trust Allah's response.

How many times should I repeat the istikhara dua for marriage?

The istikhara dua for marriage is prayed once per salah, and one prayer is sufficient. However, scholars agree you may repeat it for up to seven days if your heart remains unsettled. Each repetition is a fresh two-rakat prayer followed by the dua — not a continuous loop of words.

Should I pray istikhara for marriage before or after a proposal?

You can pray istikhara at any point: before expressing interest, after a proposal is made, or while investigating the person further. The dua asks Allah to guide the entire situation, not to confirm something already decided. Many scholars recommend doing basic due diligence first, then making istikhara with an open heart.

What are the signs that the istikhara dua for marriage was accepted?

Signs of accepted istikhara include a settled feeling of ease about moving forward, or doors closing naturally without forcing. Dreams may appear but are not required — the Prophet ﷺ did not mention dreams in the hadith. What matters is whether circumstances open or close after you sincerely surrendered the outcome to Allah.

Can I pray istikhara for someone I have feelings for?

Yes. Istikhara for marriage can be made for someone you have feelings for, as long as the potential marriage is a legitimate one to pursue. Scholars emphasize that istikhara is not a tool to make someone fall in love with you — it is a request for Allah to guide the situation toward what is truly beneficial.

Is the istikhara dua for marriage different from regular istikhara?

The istikhara dua is the same dua regardless of the decision, but the intention changes. For marriage, you replace the general phrase 'this matter' (hadha al-amr) with the specific intention in your heart: this marriage, this person, this proposal. The two-rakat prayer structure and the Arabic dua remain unchanged.

What if I pray the istikhara dua for marriage and still feel uncertain?

Uncertainty after istikhara is common and normal. Scholars advise repeating the prayer up to seven days, seeking counsel from wise people in your life, and proceeding with the option that seems more correct even without a dramatic sign. True tawakkul means acting on your best judgment after sincere supplication.
