بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Every sincere Muslim carries moments of regret — times when we fell short, acted against our better nature, or simply failed to be who we aspire to be. Islam does not leave us in that regret. It gives us a direct path back to Allah: a specific prayer, a proven supplication, and the assurance that His mercy is always greater than our mistakes.
What Is the Muslim Prayer for Forgiveness?
The Muslim prayer for forgiveness is Salat al-Tawbah (صَلَاةُ التَّوْبَةِ) — two rak'ahs prayed with sincere intention to repent before Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this prayer as a direct means of receiving forgiveness. When followed by Sayyid al-Istighfar, the Master Supplication, it becomes one of the most powerful acts of turning back to Allah. It is not a ritual of punishment — it is an act of spiritual intimacy, a private conversation between you and the Most Merciful.
What Is Salat al-Tawbah?
Salat al-Tawbah is the Prayer of Repentance, established by an authentic hadith. Ali ibn Abi Talib narrated that Abu Bakr heard the Prophet ﷺ say:
"There is no servant who commits a sin, then performs ablution, then prays two rak'ahs, then seeks forgiveness from Allah — except that Allah forgives him."
— (Sunan Abu Dawud 1521; also narrated in Tirmidhi 406)
This is not simply a general prayer offered in the hope of forgiveness. It is a dedicated, intentional act specifically designed for the moment of repentance.

The Key Supplication: Sayyid al-Istighfar
After Salat al-Tawbah, recite this — the supplication the Prophet ﷺ called Sayyid al-Istighfar (سَيِّدُ الِاسْتِغْفَارِ), the Master of All Prayers for Forgiveness:
"O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I am abiding by Your covenant and promise as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessing upon me and I acknowledge my sins. So forgive me, for there is none who forgives sins except You."
— (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306)
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites this supplication during the day with full conviction, then dies that day before the evening, will be among the people of Paradise. And whoever recites it at night with full conviction, then dies that night before the morning, will be among the people of Paradise." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306)
What the Quran Says About Seeking Forgiveness
Allah's mercy is not a distant possibility — it is a promise He made directly to those who turn to Him.
Surah Az-Zumar (39:53):
"Say: O My servants who have transgressed against their souls, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
This verse was revealed as a direct address to those who feared their sins were too great to be forgiven. The Arabic word used is jami'an — all sins, without exception.
Surah Al-Imran (3:135):
"And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins — and who can forgive sins except Allah?"
The structure of this verse is striking: seeking forgiveness is presented as the natural response of a believer to wrongdoing. It is not shame that defines the believer — it is the act of turning back.
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:222):
"...Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant (al-tawwabeen) and loves those who purify themselves."
The word used — al-tawwabeen — is the intensive form in Arabic: those who return to Allah again and again. Tawbah is not a one-time event; it is a lifelong practice.
How to Perform Salat al-Tawbah Step by Step
1. Make sincere intention (niyyah)
Before beginning, sit quietly and reflect on what you are seeking forgiveness for. Tawbah requires three elements: genuine regret for the sin, stopping the sinful action, and a firm resolve not to return to it. Without these, the prayer is form without substance.
2. Perform wudu (ablution)
Perform a complete, valid wudu. The hadith specifies purification before the prayer — this is both a physical and spiritual preparation.
3. Pray two rak'ahs
Pray two rak'ahs as you would any other nafl prayer. There is no specific surah required — recite what you know with presence of heart. The intention (niyyah) for Salat al-Tawbah is what distinguishes it.
4. Make dua after the prayer
After completing the two rak'ahs, remain in your place. Recite Sayyid al-Istighfar. Then speak to Allah directly — in Arabic or your own language. Name the sin, express your regret, ask for forgiveness, and ask for the strength not to return to it.
5. Follow through with action
True repentance (tawbah nasuh — sincere repentance, as mentioned in Surah At-Tahrim 66:8) requires follow-through. If the sin involved a person — restore their right, apologize, make amends. If it was between you and Allah, guard your resolve going forward.
Building a Habit of Seeking Forgiveness
The Prophet ﷺ himself — the best of creation — said: "By Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6307)
This teaches us that Istighfar is not only for major sins. It is a daily spiritual hygiene — a way of keeping the heart clean and the connection to Allah close.
Practical anchors for daily Istighfar:
- After each of the five daily prayers, recite "Astaghfirullah" (أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ) three times
- Recite Sayyid al-Istighfar in the morning and evening as part of your daily adhkar
- When you catch yourself in a moment of weakness, say it then and there — before the thought becomes an action
- Keep a short session of Istighfar before sleeping; it closes the day with a return to Allah
