Symbolic representation of qurbani sacrifice during Eid al-Adha

Every year at Eid al-Adha, Muslims around the world participate in one of Islam's most visible acts of worship: qurbani. The word comes from the Arabic ู‚ุฑุจุงู† (qurban), meaning "to draw near" or "an offering of nearness." Yet for many Muslims โ€” especially those raised outside regions where it is practiced openly โ€” the details remain unclear. Who is required to do it? Which animal qualifies? Where does the meat go? This guide answers all of it, grounded in Quran and authentic hadith.

What Qurbani Actually Means

Qurbani (also called udhiyah, ุฃุถุญูŠุฉ) refers to the ritual slaughter of a livestock animal on the days of Eid al-Adha โ€” the 10th, 11th, and 12th of Dhul Hijjah, with some scholars extending this to the 13th.

The act commemorates one of the defining moments in prophetic history: the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son Ismail in complete obedience to Allah. When Ibrahim demonstrated total surrender, Allah replaced the sacrifice with a ram:

ูˆูŽููŽุฏูŽูŠู’ู†ูŽุงู‡ู ุจูุฐูุจู’ุญู ุนูŽุธููŠู…ู

"And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice." โ€” (Surah As-Saffat, 37:107)

The deeper purpose is made explicit in the Quran:

"Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you." โ€” (Surah Al-Hajj, 22:37)

This reframes the entire act. Qurbani is not a transaction with Allah. It is an external expression of an inner state โ€” surrender, gratitude, and the willingness to give what is precious.

Who Must Perform Qurbani

Islamic scholars agree that qurbani is among the most significant acts of the Eid days, though they differ on its precise ruling:

The Hanafi position: Qurbani is wajib (obligatory) for every adult, sane Muslim who possesses wealth at or above the nisab threshold and is not in a state of travel during the Eid days. Deliberate omission is treated as sinful.

The majority view (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali): Qurbani is sunnah muakkadah โ€” a strongly confirmed sunnah that the Prophet ๏ทบ consistently observed and encouraged. Omitting it without excuse is blameworthy, even if not sinful by the majority ruling.

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Whoever has the capacity and does not sacrifice, let him not approach our prayer place." (Ibn Majah 3123)

Most scholars understand this as an emphatic encouragement rather than a literal prohibition โ€” but the force of the warning is unmistakable. If you are already giving zakat each year, you almost certainly meet the capacity threshold for qurbani.

Conditions for Obligation (Hanafi School)

  • Adult and of sound mind
  • Muslim
  • Not a traveler (musafir) during the Eid days
  • Possesses wealth equal to or above the nisab threshold, beyond basic needs

Children and travelers are generally exempt in the Hanafi school. Other schools do not list obligation criteria since they classify qurbani as sunnah throughout.

Valid Animals, Ages, and Conditions

Not every animal qualifies. The guidelines come from prophetic practice and are broadly agreed upon across the major schools:

Permitted animals:

  • Sheep and goats โ€” one animal per person
  • Cows, buffalo, and camels โ€” shared between up to seven people

Minimum ages:

  • Sheep: six months (or a yearling jadha' if younger animals are unavailable)
  • Goats: one year
  • Cows and buffalo: two years
  • Camels: five years

The animal must be free of serious defects. The Prophet ๏ทบ prohibited sacrificing an animal that is clearly one-eyed, visibly lame, obviously sick, or extremely emaciated. The principle is that you offer something of worth โ€” not a reject.

Timing: The sacrifice becomes valid after the Eid prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah. It continues through sunset of the 13th (or 12th, by some scholarly accounts). Sacrificing before the prayer is not valid.

Distributing the Meat

One of the most socially meaningful aspects of qurbani is what happens after the slaughter. The Prophet ๏ทบ and his companions practiced broad distribution, and scholars derive from this a recommended three-way division:

  • One third for your own household
  • One third for relatives, friends, and neighbors
  • One third for the poor and those in need

This structure reflects the spirit of the act. Qurbani is not just personal worship โ€” it is communal feeding and generosity. The third designated for the poor is the most strongly emphasized, connecting qurbani directly to the broader ethic of giving charity in Islam and the tradition of sadaqah.

It is permissible to give your entire qurbani to the poor. Many Muslims who perform qurbani through organizations in lower-income countries choose to donate all three portions there โ€” this is valid and widely encouraged by scholars.

Qurbani, the Day of Arafah, and the Best Days of the Year

Qurbani does not stand alone โ€” it is the culmination of the most blessed days in the Islamic year. The Prophet ๏ทบ said there are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah (Sahih Bukhari 969). The Day of Arafah immediately precedes Eid al-Adha, and fasting on that day expiates sins of two years.

Eid al-Adha itself is the greater of the two Islamic celebrations. Understanding its full scope โ€” the prayer, the takbir, the sacrifice, the family gathering โ€” is well covered in the complete guide to Eid al-Adha.

For those delegating qurbani to an organization abroad, there is a way to stay spiritually connected to the act: refrain from cutting hair and nails from the 1st of Dhul Hijjah until after the sacrifice is performed. This is an established sunnah (Sahih Muslim 1977) that links you in spirit to the pilgrims at Mina even from a distance.

For building the Eid morning around intentional worship, the DeenBack guide to building a morning dua routine offers practical structure for beginning Eid al-Adha with dhikr and gratitude. What Happens at the Time of Slaughter

The one performing the slaughter should face the qibla and say:

ุจูุณู’ู…ู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ูˆูŽุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ุฃูŽูƒู’ุจูŽุฑู

Bismillฤh, Allฤhu Akbar

"In the name of Allah; Allah is the Greatest."

If you are performing your own qurbani, you may add: "O Allah, this is from You and for You. Accept it from me." The Prophet ๏ทบ would say: "O Allah, accept this from Muhammad, the family of Muhammad, and the ummah of Muhammad." (Sahih Muslim 1967)

The slaughter must be performed swiftly with a sharp implement to minimize the animal's distress. The Prophet ๏ทบ was particular about this โ€” commanding that knives be sharpened out of the animal's sight and that it be treated gently before the slaughter.

Common Questions About Qurbani

Is it valid to use an organization for qurbani?

Yes, fully. Delegating the slaughter to another person or organization is established practice โ€” the Prophet ๏ทบ himself delegated the slaughter of dozens of animals during Hajj (Sahih Muslim 1218). Choose a trustworthy organization that adheres to the proper conditions of time, animal age, and correct slaughter.

Can I eat all the meat myself?

Scholars discourage keeping all the meat for oneself. Distributing to others โ€” especially the poor โ€” is a key part of what makes qurbani what it is. Eating some yourself is a recommended sunnah, not something to avoid.

Does qurbani replace zakat?

No. Qurbani and zakat are separate obligations with separate purposes. Qurbani is tied to the Eid al-Adha days; zakat is an annual purification of wealth with its own recipients and calculation.

What if I miss the qurbani days entirely?

If the days pass without a valid sacrifice and you were obligated to perform one, scholars recommend giving sadaqah equivalent to the value of the animal as a form of expiation. The Hanafi position treats this compensation as required; other schools recommend it.

What about the hajj pilgrim?

The pilgrim performing Hajj performs a separate sacrifice called hady as part of the Hajj rituals. This is distinct from the qurbani performed by non-pilgrims at home, though both occur during the same days and carry a shared spirit of surrender.

The Inner Act Behind the Outer Ritual

The ram that replaced Ismail was not a consolation prize. It was Allah's response to the completeness of Ibrahim's surrender. What Allah wanted was never the son โ€” it was the willingness to give him.

Each year, qurbani calls us back to that moment. Not because a sheep or goat is Ibrahim's son โ€” but because it asks: what am I actually willing to give? What do I hold with open hands, and what am I still gripping?

The physical sacrifice takes minutes. The interior work it points to is lifelong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is qurbani obligatory or sunnah?

According to the Hanafi madhab, qurbani is wajib (obligatory) for every adult Muslim who possesses wealth above the nisab threshold. The majority (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) classifies it as sunnah muakkadah. Both positions agree on its great virtue.

Can one animal cover an entire family?

For sheep and goats, one animal covers one person. The Prophet slaughtered on behalf of himself and his entire household, so many scholars allow the reward to extend to all family members.

What if I cannot afford qurbani?

Qurbani is required only of those who possess wealth above the nisab threshold on the days of Eid al-Adha. If that threshold is not met, there is no obligation, and giving extra charity carries its own reward.

Can I perform qurbani in another country?

Yes. You may authorize a trustworthy organization to perform qurbani on your behalf in another country. This is widely practiced and accepted by the majority of scholars.

How should the meat of qurbani be distributed?

Scholars recommend dividing the meat into thirds: one third for your household, one third for relatives and neighbors, and one third for those in need. The share for the poor is the most emphasized.
