Islamic duas for children — parent praying for a child with Quran and supplication

There is no love quite like the love a parent carries for their child — that quiet, constant ache to protect, guide, and see them flourish. In Islam, this love finds its most complete expression not just in physical care but in supplication. When your hands cannot reach, your dua can. The Prophet ﷺ made dua for his children and grandchildren. Ibrahim made dua for his descendants across generations. The Quran itself records mothers making dua before their children were even born.

What Is the Islamic Dua for Children?

The primary Islamic dua for children comes from Surah Al-Furqan 25:74, where the believing servants of Allah supplicate: "Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes, and make us an example for the righteous." This 22-word supplication captures everything a parent could want — not just a healthy child, but a righteous one who becomes a source of joy and a leader in goodness. It is a dua made in the Quran by those whom Allah praises, and it has been recited by Muslims for over 1,400 years.

The Core Dua for Children — Arabic, Transliteration, and Meaning

The most widely recited Quranic dua for one's children and family is:

رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا

"Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a'yun, waj'alna lil-muttaqina imama"

"Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes, and make us an example for the righteous." — (Surah Al-Furqan, 25:74)

The phrase qurrata a'yun — "coolness of the eyes" — is an Arabic idiom for the deepest joy. In classical Arabic, tears of happiness cool the eyes; tears of grief make them hot. Asking for your children to be qurrata a'yun is asking that they bring you the kind of happiness that overwhelms — the sight of a child making salah, a teenager choosing the right path, a grown child who still calls and asks for your blessing.

When to recite it: After the final tashahhud in salah, during sujud (prostration), after fajr and maghrib, and as a daily supplication. The Prophet ﷺ said the most accepted times for dua include the last third of the night, between the adhan and iqamah, and after the fard salah.

The Prophetic Model: How the Prophet ﷺ Prayed for Children

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ demonstrated the practice of making specific duas for children. When his grandsons Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn were young, he would hold them close and recite:

أُعِيذُكُمَا بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ

"U'idhu kuma bikalimat Allahi al-tamma, min kulli shaytanin wa hamma, wa min kulli aynin lamma"

"I seek refuge for both of you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and harmful creature and from every evil eye." — (Sahih al-Bukhari 3371)

He then said: "Your father Ibrahim used to seek refuge with these words for Ismail and Ishaq." This narration is extraordinary — it connects parental dua across four prophets (Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaq, and Muhammad ﷺ), showing that supplication for one's children is the Prophetic inheritance, not just a personal practice.

The Prophet also taught parents to say Bismillah and seek refuge from shaytaan when approaching their spouses with the intention of having children, adding: "If a child is written for them, shaytaan will never harm that child" (Sahih al-Bukhari 141).

Making Dua for Your Children Part of Daily Life

The most powerful parental dua is not one dramatic prayer — it is a consistent, daily returning to Allah on behalf of your children. Here is how to build that habit.

1. Morning protection dua after Fajr

After Fajr, recite the Prophetic dua for children: "U'idhu kuma bikalimat Allahi al-tamma..." three times over each child if they are near, or with the intention of protecting them wherever they are. The morning adhkar is the foundation of daily protection, and adding a specific prayer for your children extends that protective intention.

2. Dua during sujud in your five daily prayers

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The closest that a servant is to his Lord is when he is in sujud (prostration), so make much dua at that time" (Sahih Muslim 482). In each sajdah of your salah, you can whisper heartfelt duas for your children — for their faith, health, protection from harm, and success in this life and the next. No formal Arabic is required; your own sincere words in any language reach Allah.

3. Ibrahim's dua for righteous offspring

Prophet Ibrahim's dua from Surah Ibrahim 14:40 is specifically for one's descendants across generations:

رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةِ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِي رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَاءِ

"Rabbi ij'alni muqima al-salati wa min dhurriyyati, rabbana wa taqabbal du'a"

"My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication." — (Surah Ibrahim, 14:40)

This dua makes you part of the chain — you are not just asking for your child, but asking Allah to make you the kind of parent from whom righteous children naturally emerge. Parenting in Islam begins with the parent's own relationship with Allah.

4. The dua at birth and early childhood

When a child is born, the Sunnah includes performing adhan in the right ear. You can also make the dua that the mother of Maryam made for her newborn: seeking Allah's protection for her child and all her descendants from shaytaan (Surah Al-Imran, 3:36). For more specific duas to say over a newborn baby, authentic supplications have been gathered from the Sunnah.

5. Teaching children to make dua themselves

Your supplication for your child is powerful, but teaching them to supplicate for themselves is the lasting gift. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Order your children to pray when they are seven years old" (Abu Dawud 495). Alongside salah, teach them short duas: Bismillah before eating, Alhamdulillah when sneezing, the sleeping dua before bed. When children see parents making dua daily and sincerely, they absorb it as natural — not performance.

For families at the stage of expecting a new child, duas during pregnancy can begin this conversation before birth. And for the broader framework of raising children who hold onto Islam, how to raise Muslim children offers practical guidance alongside the spiritual dimension.

Signs Your Dua for Your Children Is Being Answered

Dua is not always answered in the way we expect, and the answer may be delayed for wisdom we cannot see. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The dua of a parent for their child is not rejected" (Tirmidhi 1905). This is an extraordinary promise — your supplication for your children carries special weight in the sight of Allah.

What to watch for:

  • Tawfiq — moments of divine facilitation, when a child makes a good choice without your prompting
  • Protection from harm — near misses that seem like coincidence but feel like hifdh (divine preservation)
  • An inclination toward prayer — a child who starts asking questions about Islam, who wants to pray, who reminds others of dhikr

These are the signs of a parent's dua taking root. Continue, be consistent, and trust the One who hears every supplication — including the silent, tearful ones in the middle of the night.

This dua asks for righteous children who bring joy and lead others to good.

What dua did Prophet Ibrahim make for his children?

Prophet Ibrahim made multiple duas for his children recorded in the Quran. In Surah Ibrahim 14:40, he supplicated: My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and from my descendants. Our Lord, accept my supplication. In Surah Al-Baqarah 2:128, he asked Allah to make him and his descendants Muslims who submit to Allah, and to show them how to worship.

What dua should I read to protect my child from the evil eye?

The Prophet Muhammad used to seek refuge for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn with the words: U'idhu kuma bikalimat Allahi al-tamma min kulli shaytanin wa hamma wa min kulli aynin lamma — I seek refuge for both of you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, harmful creature, and evil eye. This is narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari 3371 and is the Prophetic model.

Is there a dua to make for a newborn baby in Islam?

Yes. The Sunnah is to perform the adhan in the right ear and iqamah in the left ear of a newborn, and to make dua for the child. The dua from Surah Al-Imran 3:36 — Wa inni sammaytuha Maryama wa inni u'idhuhaa bika wa dhurriyyataha min al-shaytani al-rajeem — was made by the mother of Maryam seeking Allah's protection for her child and is cited as a model.

Can I make dua for my children during salah?

Yes, dua can be made for children during salah, particularly in the final tashahhud before the final salam when dua is most accepted. The Prophet said that the closest a servant is to Allah is during sujud (prostration), so making dua for your children there is especially recommended. You can recite any heartfelt supplication in your own language or the Quranic duas.

What dua is for children who have passed away?

For a child who has passed away, the parent can recite: Allahumma ijalni lahu faratan wa dhakhran wa shafi'an mushaffa'a — O Allah, make me through this child a means of going ahead and a stored treasure and an accepted intercessor. Scholars also recommend reciting Surah Al-Fatiha and giving sadaqah on the child's behalf as continuous good deeds.

How do I teach my children to make dua themselves?

The Prophet said: Teach your children salah at age seven and hold them accountable at ten (Abu Dawud 495). Teach short duas first — Bismillah before eating, the sleeping dua, and waking dua. Make dua together as a family at meal times and before bed. Children naturally absorb what they see and hear consistently, so modeling dua in daily life is the most effective teaching.
