In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Every journey begins before the first step. Whether you are catching a flight, driving across the city, or setting out for Hajj, the Prophet ๏ทบ taught us to begin with a specific supplication โ one that places our safety, our companions on the road, and our family back home entirely in Allah's hands. The dua for traveling is not a ritual formality; it is a genuine act of tawakkul that frames your entire journey as worship.
The Authentic Dua for Traveling
The Prophet ๏ทบ would say this supplication whenever he set out on a journey:
Allahumma inna nas'aluka fi safarina hadha al-birra wa at-taqwa, wa min al-'amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha, watwi 'anna bu'dahu. Allahumma anta as-sahibu fi as-safar, wa al-khalifatu fi al-ahl.
"O Allah, we ask You on this journey for goodness, piety, and deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance for us. O Allah, You are our Companion on the road and the Guardian of our family." โ (Sahih Muslim 1342)
This supplication covers everything a traveler needs: spiritual grounding (birr and taqwa), ease of the physical journey, and protection for those left behind. Note the plural form โ this dua can be said alone or together with your travel companions.
The Boarding Dua
When you step into any vehicle โ car, train, plane, or ship โ recite this verse:
ุณูุจูุญูุงูู ุงูููุฐูู ุณูุฎููุฑู ููููุง ููุฐูุง ููู ูุง ูููููุง ูููู ู ูููุฑูููููู ููุฅููููุง ุฅูููู ุฑูุจููููุง ููู ููููููุจูููู
Subhana alladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen. Wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqaliboon.
"Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have managed it ourselves. And indeed, to our Lord we shall return." โ (Surah Az-Zukhruf, 43:13-14)
The closing phrase โ "to our Lord we shall return" โ is not morbid. It is grounding. It reminds you that the destination of every journey is ultimately the same, and that nothing about your safety is in your own hands.
The Return Dua
When you arrive home safely, the Sunnah is to say:
ุขููุจูููู ุชูุงุฆูุจูููู ุนูุงุจูุฏูููู ููุฑูุจููููุง ุญูุงู ูุฏูููู
Ayiboon, ta'iboon, 'abidoon, li Rabbina hamidoon.
"We return, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord." โ (Sahih Muslim 1342)
The journey is bookended. The same hadith that opens with the departure supplication closes with homecoming. The Prophet ๏ทบ modeled travel as a complete spiritual arc โ not just transit from one point to another.
Why the Travel Dua Changes How You Journey
Travel strips away comfort and control. You leave the familiar, the scheduled, the manageable. Roads have hazards. Flights have delays. Strangers share your space. In that state of mild vulnerability, the heart softens in ways it rarely does at home.
The Quran connects travel with reflection: "Say, 'Travel through the land and observe how He began creation.'" (Surah Al-Ankabut, 29:20)
Travel is not just movement โ it is observation and remembrance. The traveler who begins with dua enters the road with that consciousness already active, eyes more open to signs (ayat) in the landscape, the weather, and the people encountered along the way.
This is why the companions of the Prophet ๏ทบ took travel seriously as a spiritual practice. They prepared their hearts before their bags. Beginning your journey with the travel dua is the clearest expression of that preparation.
For a deeper exploration of how tawakkul โ genuine reliance on Allah โ shapes the Muslim's approach to uncertainty in every domain, the Demi Manifest piece on tawakkul in daily life is worth reading alongside this. The travel dua is one of the most vivid expressions of tawakkul in the entire Sunnah.
Making the Travel Dua a Consistent Habit
The challenge with travel duas is that travel itself is irregular. Unlike Fajr or the morning adhkar, you do not recite this supplication every day โ which makes it easy to forget in the rush of packing and departing.
A few practical approaches that work:
- Attach the dua to a physical trigger. When you close your bag or pick up your car keys, that action cues the dua. Physical triggers are more reliable than mental reminders.
- Keep the Arabic text somewhere visible. A photo on your phone lock screen the night before a trip, or a card in your travel bag, means you do not have to rely on memory when you are already pressed for time.
- Say it with your travel companions. The plural form of the dua makes this natural โ it becomes a shared moment rather than a private ritual.
- When dropping someone off, recite the supplication for them as well. The Prophet ๏ทบ would make dua for departing companions, placing them in Allah's care explicitly before they left.
Our guide on how to make dua properly covers the broader principles that make supplication more effective โ presence of heart, facing the qibla when possible, and repeating the dua with genuine attention rather than rushed habit. These same principles apply to the travel dua.

Dua for Protection in an Unfamiliar Place
When you arrive in a new city or stop for the night:
ุฃูุนููุฐู ุจูููููู ูุงุชู ุงูููููู ุงูุชููุงู ููุงุชู ู ููู ุดูุฑูู ู ูุง ุฎููููู
A'udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq.
"I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created." โ (Sahih Muslim 2708)
The Prophet ๏ทบ taught that whoever says this upon stopping in a place will not be harmed there until they move on. It is short, powerful, and can be recited upon checking into any accommodation.

Common Questions
Do I need to say the full dua or is a shorter version acceptable?
The complete supplication from Sahih Muslim 1342 is the established Sunnah for travel. If you are still learning, even beginning with Bismillah and reciting Al-Fatiha before departure is far better than leaving without any dua. Build toward the full supplication as the words become familiar.
What about very short trips, like a commute across town?
The travel duas apply to all journeys, not only long-distance ones. Many scholars note that even a brief commute carries its own risks, and the habit of beginning with supplication reflects the right orientation โ that safety is always in Allah's hands, not our own grip on the steering wheel.
Is there a special dua for traveling at night?
There is no specific night-travel dua, but the Prophet ๏ทบ encouraged seeking Allah's protection when the night falls. You can supplement the travel dua with the evening adhkar โ particularly Ayatul Kursi and the three Qul surahs โ which our guide on the dua for sleeping covers in detail. These supplications are recommended any time you are in a state of relative vulnerability.
Can I make dua for someone who is traveling without being with them?
Absolutely. Making dua for a traveling family member or friend โ whether present or not โ is a beautiful act of care. The Prophet ๏ทบ regularly supplicated for companions setting out on journeys, and the Quran acknowledges the heartache of separation in ways that make interceding for the traveler through dua a natural expression of love.
Closing
Travel strips us of routine and the illusion of control โ and in that stripping is a spiritual gift. The dua for traveling is how the Prophet ๏ทบ made every departure into an act of faith rather than an act of anxiety. It is not about predicting what will happen on the road; it is about entrusting the road to the One who holds all roads.
Before your next journey, no matter how short, pause at the door and say the words. Then board, and travel with the quiet confidence that comes from having placed the journey in better hands than your own.

When exactly should I say the dua for traveling?
Recite the travel dua as you prepare to depart โ ideally after stepping out of your home and before the journey begins. The vehicle dua is said when you board your mode of transport.

Say it as soon as you remember. Allah is the Most Merciful, and the sincerity behind supplication matters. You can also recite general duas for safety and protection at any point during the journey.
Can I say the travel dua in English if I do not know the Arabic yet?
Yes. Scholars agree that dua can be made in any language. Learning the Arabic is recommended for its spiritual depth, but making dua in your own language with genuine sincerity is always valid.
