Prayer mat and prayer beads representing the istikhara prayer for seeking Allah's guidance

There are moments in life when both choices feel reasonable — a job opportunity, a marriage proposal, a major move — and you genuinely cannot tell which path is better. You have thought carefully, consulted people you trust, and still feel uncertain. This is exactly the situation that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prepared his companions for by teaching them صلاة الاستخارة (Salat al-Istikhara) — the prayer of seeking the best.

It is not a prayer for the indecisive. It is a prayer for the humble: someone who recognizes that their own knowledge is limited, and that Allah's knowledge is without limit.

How Do You Perform Istikhara Prayer?

Istikhara is a two-rakat voluntary prayer followed by a specific supplication (dua) in which you ask Allah to decree the better of your options and turn you away from harm. To perform it: make a fresh wudu, pray two rakats of nafl prayer with the intention of istikhara, then after the final tashahhud — before making salam — recite the istikhara dua, mentioning your specific matter where indicated. There are no special surahs required; any surahs you know after Al-Fatihah are sufficient.

Why Does Islam Teach Istikhara?

The theological foundation of istikhara is tawakkul — complete reliance on Allah — and the recognition that human knowledge is genuinely incomplete. The Quran addresses this directly:

وَعَسَىٰ أَن تَكْرَهُوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ وَعَسَىٰ أَن تُحِبُّوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ شَرٌّ لَّكُمْ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

"It may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you, and it may be that you love a thing which is evil for you. And Allah knows and you do not know." — (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:216)

Allah also teaches in the Quran that consultation and then decisive reliance on Him is the correct posture of a believer:

فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَوَكِّلِينَ

"And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely upon Him." — (Surah Al-Imran, 3:159)

Istikhara is not a substitute for thinking and planning — it is the crown placed on top of them. See quran.com/3/159 for the full context of this verse on consultation and trust.

Jabir ibn Abdullah narrated that the Prophet ﷺ "used to teach us istikhara in all matters just as he used to teach us the surahs of the Quran" — meaning he considered it so important that no Muslim should be ignorant of it (Sahih al-Bukhari 1166). Step-by-Step Guide to Performing Istikhara

What You Need Before Starting

  • A state of ritual purity (wudu)
  • A clean place to pray
  • A specific matter in mind — istikhara is for a defined decision, not a vague life direction

The Steps

1. Make your intention (niyyah) Internally resolve: "I am praying two rakats of voluntary prayer for the purpose of istikhara." You do not need to verbalize your intention.

2. Pray two rakats of nafl (voluntary) prayer Pray them as you would any other voluntary prayer. Many scholars recommend reciting Surah Al-Kafirun (109) in the first rakat and Surah Al-Ikhlas (112) after Al-Fatihah in the second rakat — though this is a recommendation, not an obligation.

3. After the final tashahhud, before making salam, recite the istikhara dua

"O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power, and I ask You from Your great bounty. Indeed, You are capable and I am not. You know and I do not know, and You are the Knower of all unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs — decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs — turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree what is good for me wherever it may be, and then make me content with it." — (Sahih al-Bukhari 1166)

At the point where the dua says "this matter" (hadha al-amra), call the specific matter to mind, or say it aloud. After the dua, complete the salam to end the prayer.

4. Take practical steps and observe how things unfold Istikhara does not suspend your responsibility to act wisely. Continue gathering information, consulting knowledgeable people, and pursuing your options with full effort. Allah guides through the unfolding of events as much as through feelings.

Building the Habit of Consulting Allah

Istikhara is most powerful when it becomes a natural part of how you approach decisions — not a last resort you try when nothing else works, but a first response that orients every major choice toward Allah.

Start before the pressure begins. If you know a significant decision is coming — an interview, a proposal, a business deal — begin praying istikhara in the days before, not the night before the deadline. Rushed istikhara still counts, but unhurried prayer carries more presence.

Journal what you observe. After istikhara, write down the state of your heart and the circumstances as they develop. Over time, you may notice patterns in how Allah's guidance tends to reach you — whether through a clear feeling, through the opinions of people you consult, or through circumstances opening or closing unexpectedly.

Pair istikhara with shura (consultation). The Prophet ﷺ was the most guided of all humans, yet the Quran still commanded him to consult his companions. Istikhara is not an alternative to seeking advice from knowledgeable, sincere people — it is the spiritual anchor that keeps that advice-seeking oriented toward Allah's will.

DeenBack's guide on building daily Islamic habits offers practical strategies for making supplications and consultations a consistent part of your routine. Demimanifest explores the daily practice of trusting Allah through hardship as a complement to the istikhara mindset.

Common Mistakes in Performing Istikhara

Waiting for a dream. Many people pray istikhara expecting a clear vision in their sleep and, when it doesn't come, conclude that it "didn't work." Scholars including Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and Imam al-Nawawi have clarified that a dream is not the criterion — the answer comes through the direction your affairs take.

Praying istikhara after the decision is already made. Istikhara is for genuine uncertainty. Praying it after you have emotionally committed to one option and are simply hoping for confirmation is not the intention of the prayer.

Praying istikhara for matters already determined by the Quran and Sunnah. You do not perform istikhara to decide whether to pray or whether to pay a debt you owe. These are obligations. Istikhara is for matters in which both options are permissible.

Neglecting practical investigation. Istikhara is a prayer, not a substitute for research. Seek counsel from qualified people, study your options honestly, and pursue every practical avenue — then trust that Allah is guiding through what you find.

Istikhara is one of the most beautiful expressions of Islamic theology: the acknowledgment that you are not alone in your decisions, that the One who knows all unseen matters is personally attentive to what concerns you, and that seeking His guidance is an act of worship in itself. Learn it. Practice it. Let it become as natural as breathing before any significant choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is istikhara in Islam?

Istikhara is a two-rakat voluntary prayer in which a Muslim asks Allah to guide them toward the better of two choices and turn them away from harm. The word istikhara comes from the Arabic root meaning 'to seek what is best.' It is established by an authentic hadith of the Prophet Muhammad narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah in Sahih al-Bukhari.

How many rakats is the istikhara prayer?

Istikhara consists of two rakats prayed with the intention of seeking Allah's guidance. They are voluntary (nafl) rakats, separate from your five obligatory daily prayers. You may recite any surah after Al-Fatihah in each rakat. After completing the two rakats and the tashahhud, you recite the istikhara dua before making salam.

When should I perform istikhara?

You should perform istikhara whenever you face a significant decision where both options appear permissible and you are uncertain which is better. Scholars recommend praying istikhara before decisions about marriage, travel, major purchases, career changes, or any matter of consequence. It is not for choosing between halal and haram — that is already decided by the Quran and Sunnah.

Do I need to see a dream after istikhara?

Seeing a dream after istikhara is not required. Many scholars clarify that the answer comes not necessarily through a dream but through a shift in circumstances, a feeling of ease or difficulty toward one option, or the way events unfold. You should take practical steps toward the decision and trust that Allah is guiding the outcome according to what He knows is best for you.

Can I perform istikhara more than once for the same decision?

Yes — scholars permit repeating istikhara up to seven times for the same matter if you remain genuinely uncertain after the first prayer. However, it should not become a form of obsessive uncertainty. If after sincere istikhara and reflection you feel one path has become clearer or easier, take that as your guidance and proceed with trust in Allah.

Can a woman perform istikhara during her period?

A woman in a state of menstruation or postnatal bleeding cannot pray the two rakats of istikhara, since ritual prayer requires a state of purity (tahara). However, she may still recite the istikhara dua on its own as a supplication to Allah without the prayer portion. Once she is ritually pure, she may perform the full prayer.

How long should I wait for an answer after istikhara?

There is no fixed waiting period after istikhara. You should proceed with the practical steps available to you — consulting trusted people, gathering information, and making your best assessment — while remaining open to how circumstances develop. If matters unfold with ease toward one path, take that as a sign of divine guidance, and if obstacles keep appearing, consider whether the other path is better.
