In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Hajj is unlike any other act of worship in Islam. Every year, millions of Muslims from every nation on earth converge on Mecca โ wearing the same two white cloths, reciting the same Talbiyah, standing on the same ground where the Prophet ๏ทบ made his farewell sermon. Status, wealth, and nationality dissolve. What remains is the soul before its Lord.
Allah says in the Quran (Surah Al-Imran, 3:97):
"Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to Allah by all who can make the journey. Whoever disbelieves โ Allah is independent of all the worlds."
If you are preparing for Hajj, or learning about it to prepare yourself spiritually and practically, this guide walks through every ritual day by day, with authentic duas and clear guidance for each step.
Why Hajj Is the Journey of a Lifetime
Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam and the only pillar that combines physical endurance, financial sacrifice, collective worship, and profound individual transformation into a single act. The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
"Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah and does not utter any obscene speech or do any evil deed will go back [home] as pure as the day his mother gave birth to him." (Sahih Bukhari 1521)
The purification Hajj offers is total. It is the only act of worship described in authentic hadith as returning a person to the state of a newborn โ sins erased, account reset, slate clean. For anyone who has felt the weight of their past or longed for a fresh beginning with Allah, Hajj is the answer Islam provides.
Our overview of Hajj and its spiritual significance gives broader context for what you will experience, and our guide to how to perform Umrah covers the lesser pilgrimage, which many pilgrims combine with Hajj.
Day-by-Day Step-by-Step Guide to Hajj
Day 0: Enter Ihram Before Reaching Mecca
Before entering Mecca, every pilgrim must enter the state of Ihram (ุฅุญุฑุงู ) at the miqat โ one of five designated boundary points around the city. Which miqat you use depends on your direction of travel.
To enter Ihram:
- Perform ghusl (full ritual bath). Our guide on how to perform wudu and ritual purification covers the essentials.
- Men: wear two unstitched white cloths and open sandals
- Women: modest, loose clothing covering everything except face and hands
- Pray two rak'ahs (if not at a forbidden prayer time)
- Make the intention (niyyah) for Hajj and recite the Talbiyah:
ููุจูููููู ุงููููููู ูู ููุจููููููุ ููุจูููููู ููุง ุดูุฑูููู ูููู ููุจููููููุ ุฅูููู ุงููุญูู ูุฏู ููุงููููุนูู ูุฉู ูููู ููุงููู ูููููุ ููุง ุดูุฑูููู ูููู
"Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner. Verily all praise, blessings, and sovereignty are Yours. You have no partner."
Continue reciting the Talbiyah until you throw the first pebble at Al-Aqabah on the 10th.
Day 1 โ 8th Dhul Hijjah: Yawm Al-Tarwiyah
Travel from Mecca to Mina before midday. Spend the entire day and night in Mina, praying Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr โ each shortened to two rak'ahs (except Maghrib) and prayed on time, not combined. This day is for mental and spiritual preparation. Recite Quran, make dua, and settle your heart for the most important day of your life.
Day 2 โ 9th Dhul Hijjah: Yawm Al-Arafah
This is the heart of Hajj. The Prophet ๏ทบ declared: "Hajj is Arafah." (Sunan al-Nasai 3016)
Morning: After Fajr in Mina, travel to the plain of Arafah. Pray Dhuhr and Asr combined and shortened (four rak'ahs total, two for each prayer).
The Wuquf (Standing): From noon until sunset, stand โ or sit โ on the plain of Arafah in prayer, supplication, and remembrance of Allah. This is the most accepted time for dua in the entire year. Raise your hands and ask for everything โ forgiveness, guidance, mercy for your family, ease for the ummah. Do not let a single moment of Arafah pass in idleness.
A powerful dua the Prophet ๏ทบ frequently made at Arafah:
ููุง ุฅููููู ุฅููููุง ุงูููููู ููุญูุฏููู ููุง ุดูุฑูููู ููููุ ูููู ุงููู ููููู ูููููู ุงููุญูู ูุฏู ูููููู ุนูููู ููููู ุดูููุกู ููุฏููุฑู
"There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the sovereignty and all praise, and He is over all things competent." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3585)
Evening: After sunset, travel to Muzdalifah. Pray Maghrib and Isha combined (Maghrib three rak'ahs, Isha two). Spend the night outdoors under the sky. Before sleeping, collect 49 to 70 small pebbles for the stoning ritual ahead.
Day 3 โ 10th Dhul Hijjah: Yawm Al-Nahr (Eid Al-Adha)
The most ritually demanding day of Hajj. Complete these four acts in the following preferred order:
1. Rami โ Stone the Jamarat Travel to Mina. Stone the largest Jamarat (Al-Aqabah) with 7 pebbles, saying "Allahu Akbar" with each throw. Stop reciting the Talbiyah before your first throw.
2. Hady โ Animal Sacrifice Offer the Hajj animal sacrifice (qurbani). This is wajib (obligatory) for Hajj al-Tamattu and Hajj al-Qiran. Many pilgrims arrange for this through official Hajj authorities.
3. Halq or Taqsir โ Cut the Hair Men: shave the head completely (halq), or cut hair uniformly short (taqsir). Shaving is more virtuous. Women: cut a fingertip's length from the hair only.
After these three steps, you are in partial Ihram exit โ all restrictions are lifted except marital relations.
4. Tawaf Al-Ifadah and Sai Return to Masjid Al-Haram in Mecca. Perform Tawaf (seven circuits around the Kaaba), then pray two rak'ahs at Maqam Ibrahim. Familiarise yourself with the correct form of Salah before your journey. Then perform Sai โ seven circuits between Safa and Marwa. After this, full Ihram restrictions are lifted.
Return to Mina to spend the night.
Days 4 and 5 โ 11th and 12th (or 13th) Dhul Hijjah: Days of Tashreeq
Each day after midday (Dhuhr), stone all three Jamarat in order:
- Al-Ula (smallest) โ 7 pebbles, saying "Allahu Akbar" with each
- Al-Wusta (middle) โ 7 pebbles
- Al-Aqabah (largest) โ 7 pebbles
It is permissible to leave Mina on the 12th before sunset (known as Nufur Awwal). Staying for the 13th and completing its stoning is more virtuous and strongly recommended.
Final Ritual: Tawaf Al-Wada
Before departing Mecca, perform a farewell Tawaf of seven circuits around the Kaaba. This is obligatory for most pilgrims (except those who are menstruating or postpartum, for whom it is waived). With this, your Hajj is complete.
Preparing for Hajj Spiritually and Practically
Hajj requires preparation on every level โ spiritual, physical, financial, and logistical. The months before your journey matter enormously.
Spiritually:
- Deepen your daily salah practice well before your trip. Hajj requires consistent, correct prayer โ sometimes in crowds, heat, and fatigue.
- Begin memorising the key duas for Arafah, Tawaf, and the Jamarat so you are not searching for them on your phone during those sacred moments.
- Settle your affairs, repay debts, reconcile with anyone you have wronged, and make a sincere tawbah before you leave.
Practically:
- Research which type of Hajj you are performing (Tamattu, Qiran, or Ifrad), as the rituals vary slightly.
- Prepare physically for several miles of walking each day, often in heat.
- Travel with a trusted group and identify your camp, accommodation, and meeting points before the crowds arrive.
The Deenback guide to daily purification is a strong resource for building the ritual purity foundations that underpin every moment of Hajj. And Demi Manifest's reflection on remembering death in Islam pairs naturally with the profound spiritual reckoning of standing at Arafah.

Leaving Arafah before sunset: This is a critical error. The standing at Arafah must extend until after sunset. Leaving early without a valid excuse renders the Hajj incomplete according to the majority of scholars.
Stoning the Jamarat out of order: On the Days of Tashreeq, you must stone Al-Ula first, then Al-Wusta, then Al-Aqabah. Reversing the order or skipping one invalidates the stoning for that day.
Missing Tawaf Al-Ifadah: This is a rukn (pillar) of Hajj โ not merely recommended. Without it, Hajj is incomplete and Ihram restrictions are not fully lifted.
Not spending the nights in Mina: The nights of Tashreeq (11th, 12th, and optionally 13th) must be spent in Mina. Sleeping primarily in Mecca-based hotels on those nights is a violation that requires expiation.
Common Questions About Hajj
Can I perform Hajj on behalf of someone who has passed away? Yes, Hajj can be performed on behalf of a deceased parent or relative who was unable to perform it in their lifetime, or on behalf of someone physically incapable of making the journey. Make the intention on their behalf when entering Ihram.
What is Hajj mabrur? Hajj mabrur (ุญุฌ ู ุจุฑูุฑ) is a Hajj accepted by Allah โ performed sincerely, with proper attention to all rituals, avoiding sins, and with good character throughout. The Prophet ๏ทบ said its only fitting reward is Jannah. Scholars say one sign of acceptance is that you return to your daily life better than you left it.
Is it recommended to perform Umrah before Hajj? Yes. Hajj al-Tamattu โ the most commonly performed type of Hajj โ includes performing Umrah first, exiting Ihram, then re-entering Ihram for Hajj on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah. Our complete guide to how to perform Umrah walks through every step of that preliminary pilgrimage.
The Journey That Reshapes You
When Ibrahim (ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ) was commanded to call humanity to pilgrimage, Allah made that call resound in every heart until the Day of Judgment. If you hear it, answer it. Hajj reshapes you in ways that no other experience in life can.
The five days between the miqat and Tawaf Al-Wada strip away the noise of ordinary existence and return you to something essential โ your covenant with Allah, your place in the great ummah, your purpose. Carry that back with you, and let it shape every ordinary day that follows.
