Pilgrims in white Ihram performing Tawaf around the Kaaba in Masjid Al-Haram at dawn

Millions of Muslims dream of standing before the Kaaba, circling the ancient house of Allah in white garments, and completing the rituals of Umrah. Unlike Hajj, which takes place on specific days each year, Umrah can be performed at any time โ€” making it one of the most accessible major acts of worship in Islam.

The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ is reported to have said:

"Follow up Hajj and Umrah, because they eliminate poverty and sins as the bellows removes impurities from iron." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 810)

Whether you are preparing for your first journey to Mecca or refreshing your knowledge before you travel again, this guide walks you through every step of Umrah with clarity, authentic duas, and practical guidance.

What Umrah Means in Islam

Allah commands in the Quran (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:196):

"Complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah."

The word Umrah (ุนู…ุฑุฉ) comes from an Arabic root meaning "to visit a populated place." Scholars understand it as a pilgrimage of intention and purification โ€” you leave ordinary life behind, enter a sacred state, and direct every movement toward Allah alone.

Unlike the five obligatory pillars, Umrah is a sunnah mu'akkadah โ€” a strongly emphasized practice that the Prophet ๏ทบ performed multiple times. Each Umrah wipes away the sins between it and the previous one. The closeness to Allah it produces is available to every Muslim who can make the journey, at any point in the year.

For a broader grounding in Islamic worship and its daily application, our overview of top Islamic practices covers the spiritual context in which Umrah sits.

The Complete Step-by-Step Guide to Umrah

Step 1: Enter the State of Ihram

Ihram (ุฅุญุฑุงู…) is both a physical state and a spiritual threshold. You enter it at the miqat โ€” one of five designated geographical boundaries around Mecca, determined by your direction of travel.

Before reaching the miqat:

  • Perform ghusl (full ritual bath) for purification. Our guide on how to perform wudu covers the essentials of ritual purity.
  • Men: wear two unstitched white cloths (izar covering the lower body and rida for the upper), with open sandals
  • Women: wear loose, modest clothing covering everything except the face and hands โ€” no niqab or gloves while in Ihram
  • Pray two rak'ahs before making your intention (if not at a forbidden prayer time)

Then face the Qibla, make your niyyah (intention) for Umrah, and recite the Talbiyah:

"Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner. Verily all praise, blessings, and sovereignty are Yours. You have no partner."

Continue reciting the Talbiyah throughout your journey until you begin Tawaf.

Step 2: Perform Tawaf

Upon entering Masjid Al-Haram, move to the Kaaba and begin Tawaf โ€” circling it seven times counterclockwise. Tawaf begins and ends at the Black Stone (Al-Hajar Al-Aswad), which is marked by a green light on the wall above.

For this Tawaf (Tawaf Al-Qudum upon arrival):

  • Men expose the right shoulder (Idtibaa) by draping the Ihram cloth under the right armpit
  • Men jog lightly (Raml) for the first three circuits if the crowd allows
  • Touch or kiss the Black Stone if you can reach it; otherwise, point toward it and say "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar"
  • There are no obligatory specific duas during Tawaf โ€” make any sincere dua or dhikr freely as you circle

After seven circuits, cover the right shoulder. Then pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim (the Station of Ibrahim). Review how to pray Salah if you need a refresher on the postures and recitations.

Step 3: Drink Zamzam Water

After the prayer at Maqam Ibrahim, proceed to the Zamzam water stations and drink. The Prophet ๏ทบ said Zamzam is "a food for the hungry and a cure for the sick." (Ibn Majah 3062)

Face the Qibla while drinking and make dua with sincere intention. Many pilgrims drink Zamzam while holding a specific niyyah โ€” for healing, for knowledge, for closeness to Allah.

Step 4: Perform Sai Between Safa and Marwa

Sai (ุงู„ุณุนูŠ) is the walking between the hills of Safa and Marwa โ€” seven circuits total, beginning at Safa and ending at Marwa. It commemorates Hajar's (ุนู„ูŠู‡ุง ุงู„ุณู„ุงู…) desperate search for water for her infant son Ismail before the Zamzam spring burst forth.

At Safa, face the Kaaba and recite, as Allah says in the Quran (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:158):

ุฅูู†ูŽู‘ ุงู„ุตูŽู‘ููŽุง ูˆูŽุงู„ู’ู…ูŽุฑู’ูˆูŽุฉูŽ ู…ูู†ู’ ุดูŽุนูŽุงุฆูุฑู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู

"Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah."

Then raise your hands in supplication and begin walking toward Marwa. Men jog lightly between the two green markers within the enclosed corridor. Women walk the entire distance. Each leg (Safa to Marwa, or Marwa to Safa) counts as one circuit. Your seventh circuit ends at Marwa.

Step 5: Cut the Hair (Halq or Taqsir)

The final ritual of Umrah is cutting the hair:

  • Men: shave the head completely (halq) or cut all hair uniformly to a short length (taqsir). Shaving carries greater reward.
  • Women: cut approximately a fingertip's length from the tips of the hair. Shaving is not prescribed for women.

With this, you exit the state of Ihram and your Umrah is complete. All restrictions are lifted.

Preparing Well Makes the Difference

Umrah is as much a matter of spiritual preparation as logistics. The weeks before your trip are when the real work begins.

Learning the duas for Tawaf and Sai ahead of time means your eyes stay on the Kaaba instead of a phone screen. Strengthening your daily salah practice before you leave means arriving in Mecca with a worship rhythm already in place. Reading about the history of Ibrahim and Ismail (ุนู„ูŠู‡ู…ุง ุงู„ุณู„ุงู…) gives each ritual a depth of meaning beyond the physical acts.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Umrah

Starting Tawaf from the wrong point: Tawaf begins at the Black Stone. A green light marks the wall above it. Starting even half a circuit away from it means that circuit is not counted.

Breaking wudu during Tawaf: Your wudu must remain intact throughout Tawaf. If it breaks, stop, re-make wudu, return to the Black Stone, and restart that circuit โ€” previously completed circuits remain valid.

Wearing Ihram wrong for the two-rak'ah prayer: Idtibaa (exposed right shoulder) is for Tawaf only. Cover the shoulder before praying the two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim.

Thinking wudu is required for Sai: Unlike Tawaf, wudu is not a condition of validity for Sai โ€” but maintaining it throughout is strongly recommended for respect and presence of heart.

Common Questions About Umrah

Can I perform Umrah on behalf of someone who has passed away? Yes. The majority of scholars permit performing Umrah on behalf of a deceased parent or relative who was unable to perform it themselves. Make the intention on their behalf when entering Ihram at the miqat.

Is Umrah during Ramadan more virtuous? Yes. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Umrah during Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj." (Sahih Bukhari 1863) This does not fulfill the obligation of Hajj, but the spiritual reward is immense. Our Ramadan complete guide covers how to make the most of this blessed month.

What if I accidentally break a rule of Ihram? If you forget or do so out of genuine ignorance, make istighfar (sincere repentance). Some violations require a fidyah (expiation) โ€” fasting three days, feeding six poor people, or sacrificing an animal. A local scholar or guide at the miqat can help you determine the right course of action.

Returning Changed

The Kaaba will wait for you. The rituals of Umrah have been the same since Ibrahim (ุนู„ูŠู‡ ุงู„ุณู„ุงู…) called the world to the house of Allah โ€” and they will remain the same until the end of time. What varies is what each pilgrim carries back.

The closeness to Allah you feel in Mecca is a reference point to return to in your daily life. The clarity of Ihram โ€” stripped of status, adornment, and distraction โ€” is a reminder of who you are in the sight of Allah. Carry that home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Hajj and Umrah?

Hajj is the obligatory pilgrimage performed during specific days in Dhul Hijjah and is one of the five pillars of Islam. Umrah is the lesser pilgrimage, which can be performed at any time of year and is highly recommended but not obligatory.

How long does Umrah take?

The rituals of Umrah โ€” Tawaf, prayer at Maqam Ibrahim, Zamzam, and Sai โ€” typically take 2 to 4 hours for most pilgrims. The total trip duration depends on travel arrangements.

Can I perform Umrah at any time of year?

Yes. Unlike Hajj, Umrah can be performed at any time of the year. Performing Umrah during Ramadan carries the reward equivalent to Hajj, according to an authentic hadith from Sahih Bukhari.

What are the prohibitions of Ihram?

While in Ihram, you must avoid cutting hair or nails, using perfume, covering the head (for men), wearing stitched clothing (for men), engaging in marital relations, hunting, and arguing or quarreling.

What dua should I say during Tawaf?

There are no compulsory specific words for Tawaf โ€” you may make any dua or dhikr. A common dua at the Yemeni Corner before the Black Stone is: Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina azab an-nar.
