Why Sunnah Prayers Are Worth Understanding

Most Muslims grow up knowing the five daily prayers. Fewer have a clear picture of what surrounds them: the voluntary prayers the Prophet ๏ทบ consistently prayed before and after the fard, the night prayer he described as a station of honor, the mid-morning prayer whose rewards he praised.

Sunnah prayers โ€” ู†ูˆุงูู„ (nawafil) โ€” do not carry the same obligation as the five fard prayers. But they carry something else: a path to a deeper, more continuous relationship with Allah. They fill the gaps, compensate for deficiencies, and transform your prayer life from five discrete moments into a thread woven through your whole day.

This guide covers the main types of sunnah prayers, how to pray them, and how to build them into your life in a way that actually holds.

Why Sunnah Prayers Matter: The Islamic Foundation

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Whoever prays twelve rak'ahs during the day and night, a house will be built for him in Paradise." (Sahih Muslim 728)

Beyond reward, sunnah prayers serve a structural function. The Prophet ๏ทบ also taught that on the Day of Resurrection, a person's obligatory prayers will be examined first. If they are deficient, Allah will say: "Look and see if My slave has any voluntary prayers โ€” then make up the shortfall from his voluntary prayers." (Tirmidhi 413)

This is not a loophole for neglecting the fard. It is a reminder that sunnah prayers form a buffer โ€” a reflection of love for worship beyond what is required.

Allah says about the night prayer:

"And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional worship for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station."

โ€” (Surah Al-Isra, 17:79)

The Arabic โ€” ู…ูŽู‚ูŽุงู…ู‹ุง ู…ูŽู‘ุญู’ู…ููˆุฏู‹ุง (maqaman mahmuda), a praised station โ€” is among the highest honors mentioned in the Quran. It is attached directly to the act of rising in the night to pray.

The Main Types of Sunnah Prayers

The Rawatib Prayers

The rawatib (ุฑูˆุงุชุจ) are the sunnah prayers attached to the five daily prayers. The strongly emphasized ones (sunnah muakkadah) are:

  • 2 rak'ahs before Fajr. The Prophet ๏ทบ said about these specifically: "The two rak'ahs of Fajr are better than the world and all it contains." (Sahih Muslim 725) Pray them between the adhan and the iqamah.
  • 4 rak'ahs before Zuhr (in two sets of 2). Prayed before the obligatory Zuhr.
  • 2 rak'ahs after Zuhr. Prayed immediately after Zuhr.
  • 2 rak'ahs after Maghrib. Prayed right after the obligatory Maghrib prayer.
  • 2 rak'ahs after Isha. Prayed after the obligatory Isha prayer.

Total: 12 rak'ahs โ€” the same 12 referenced in the hadith from Sahih Muslim 728.

To pray any rawatib prayer: make the intention for the sunnah prayer of that particular prayer time, then follow the standard format โ€” opening takbir, Al-Fatiha, a surah, ruku', sujood โ€” exactly as you do in the fard prayer. See our complete guide to praying salah if you want to review the full structure.

Salat al-Duha

Salat al-Duha (ุตู„ุงุฉ ุงู„ุถุญู‰) is prayed after the sun rises fully โ€” approximately 15โ€“20 minutes after sunrise โ€” until just before Zuhr time. The minimum is 2 rak'ahs; you may pray up to 12.

The Prophet ๏ทบ said that in the morning, charity is due from every joint in your body. Two rak'ahs of Duha fulfills all of it. (Sahih Muslim 720)

This prayer anchors the mid-morning. It has no required recitation beyond Al-Fatiha and a surah. Many scholars recommend Surah Ad-Duha (93) or Surah Al-Inshirah (94) given their themes of blessing and ease.

Salat al-Tahajjud

Tahajjud (ุชู‡ุฌุฏ) is prayed in the latter portion of the night โ€” ideally after sleeping and waking specifically for it, though praying it before sleeping is also valid for those who genuinely cannot wake up. The best time is the final third of the night, when Allah descends to the nearest heaven and says: "Is there anyone to invoke Me that I may respond? Is there anyone to ask of Me that I may give him what he asked?" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145)

The Prophet ๏ทบ consistently prayed 8โ€“13 rak'ahs at night, ending with witr. For a full step-by-step approach see how to pray tahajjud and our overview of the benefits of tahajjud.

Witr Prayer

Witr (ูˆุชุฑ โ€” "odd") is prayed as the last prayer of the night, after Isha. It can be 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11 rak'ahs. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Make witr your last prayer at night." (Sahih al-Bukhari 998)

Our guide on how to pray witr covers the method and recitations in full.

Salat al-Awwabin

Six rak'ahs prayed after Maghrib, in three sets of two. This prayer has a specific reward mentioned in a hadith narrated by Tirmidhi (435) โ€” though scholars differ on the strength of that narration, the practice itself is supported by the general virtue of voluntary prayers.

Building the Habit: Starting Small and Staying Consistent

The rawatib prayers are the best starting point because they are already anchored to the fard prayers you are already praying. You do not need a new time slot โ€” you extend what you already do.

Start with just two of the twelve rawatib:

  • The 2 rak'ahs before Fajr (the most virtuous, per the hadith above)
  • The 2 rak'ahs after Maghrib (easy to do immediately after, while still on the mat)

Do these for two weeks. When they feel natural, add two more. Build from there.

For Duha and Tahajjud, the challenge is the time. Duha requires setting a small window mid-morning. Tahajjud requires waking earlier than usual. Our guide on the blessings and habits around Fajr has practical consistency tips that apply equally here.

A few practical anchors that help:

  • Place your prayer mat out the night before. The visual cue lowers the barrier.
  • Sleep with the intention of waking for Tahajjud. Scholars have noted that sleeping with sincere intention carries its own reward, even if you miss the prayer itself.
  • Keep a simple tracker โ€” a checkmark in a notebook or app โ€” so your consistency becomes visible over time.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Rushing through rawatib prayers. Sunnah prayers are not checkboxes to clear before leaving the masjid. Pray them with presence. The quality of connection is the point.

Treating sunnah prayers as casually optional. Occasional misses are human. But habitually abandoning the muakkadah sunnah prayers treats the practice of the Prophet ๏ทบ as irrelevant. Our discussion of the importance of jamaah prayer touches on why consistent communal and voluntary prayer habits reinforce each other.

Praying sunnah during prohibited times. After Asr and after Fajr prayer are times when nafl prayers are generally disliked. The exception is the 2 rak'ahs before Fajr, which may be prayed even after the adhan for Fajr.

Confusing niyyah between sunnah and fard. Your intention determines which prayer you are performing. State clearly โ€” even inwardly โ€” whether you are praying sunnah or fard before each prayer.

Common Questions

Can women pray sunnah prayers at home? Yes โ€” and for women, praying at home (including sunnah prayers) is generally considered more virtuous than going to the masjid. The same conditions of purity and prayer time apply.

What if I lose count of rak'ahs in a sunnah prayer? Build on certainty โ€” assume the lower number and complete accordingly. You may also make one sujud of forgetfulness (sujud al-sahw) after the final sitting.

Should I recite Al-Fatiha in every rak'ah of a sunnah prayer? Yes. Al-Fatiha is required in every rak'ah of every salah, whether fard or nafl. You add a surah after it in the first and second rak'ahs.

Are there recommended surahs for specific sunnah prayers? Yes, some. The Prophet ๏ทบ often recited Surah Al-Kafirun (109) and Surah Al-Ikhlas (112) in the two rak'ahs before Fajr. For Duha, many scholars suggest Surah Ad-Duha and Al-Inshirah. Beyond these, you have freedom to recite whatever you know well.

Where can I find the hadith evidence for these prayers? The chapters on prayer in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are the primary reference โ€” accessible at sunnah.com. Yaqeen Institute also has accessible scholarship on voluntary worship at yaqeeninstitute.org.

Closing: More Than Extra Credit

Sunnah prayers are not Islam's extra credit. They are the texture of the relationship โ€” the moments between obligations where you choose, freely, to return. The Prophet ๏ทบ did not pray twelve rak'ahs a day because he had to. He prayed them because he loved the prayer.

Start with the two rak'ahs before Fajr. Let that love grow from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sunnah prayers are there in Islam?

There are multiple categories of sunnah prayers. The rawatib prayers โ€” 12 rak'ahs attached to the five daily prayers โ€” are the most consistently emphasized. Beyond these, the Duha, Tahajjud, and Salat al-Awwabin are recommended with their own rewards.

Are sunnah prayers obligatory?

No. Sunnah prayers are voluntary. However, the muakkadah (strongly emphasized) sunnah prayers โ€” such as the two rak'ahs before Fajr โ€” carry a special status. The Prophet consistently observed them, and abandoning them habitually without reason is discouraged.

What is the difference between sunnah muakkadah and ghair muakkadah?

Sunnah muakkadah are prayers the Prophet consistently performed and rarely abandoned โ€” like the 2 rak'ahs before Fajr and the 2 after Maghrib. Ghair muakkadah are recommended but less emphasized. Both carry reward, but the muakkadah carry stronger spiritual weight.

Can I make up missed sunnah prayers?

Yes, for the muakkadah sunnah prayers. If you miss the two rak'ahs before Fajr, you may pray them after the Fajr prayer or later in the morning. The Prophet made up his sunnah prayers after Zuhr if he had missed them before it.

When should I not pray sunnah prayers?

Sunnah prayers are disliked during three prohibited times: after Fajr prayer until sunrise, when the sun is at its peak at noon, and after Asr until Maghrib. The two rak'ahs before Fajr are the only nafl prayer permitted after the Fajr adhan.
