Asr prayer rakat guide — a prayer mat in warm afternoon light representing the middle prayer singled out in the Quran

A Prayer That Lands in Your Busiest Hour

The afternoon is when most people are deepest in work, school, or family demands. And it is exactly there — in that compressed, demanding window — that Salat al-Asr falls. Of all five daily prayers, Asr is the one most reliably swallowed by the day. Knowing how many rakats it requires, what the scholars agree on, and when the window opens gives you the clarity to pray it confidently rather than guess under pressure.

How Many Rakats Is the Asr Prayer?

Salat al-Asr (صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ) consists of 4 obligatory Fard rakats, prayed silently in the late afternoon. All four major Sunni schools of law — Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali — agree on this count without a single dissenting voice. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also recommended 4 voluntary Sunnah rakats before the Fard, making the complete Asr practice 8 rakats. Of those 8, only the 4 Fard are required of every adult Muslim.

What Are the Pre-Asr Sunnah Rakats?

The Prophet ﷺ said: "May Allah have mercy on one who prays four rakats before Asr prayer." (Abu Dawud 1271)

These 4 pre-Asr rakats are voluntary (nafl or Sunnah ghayr muakkadah in most schools). The Hanafi madhab, however, designates them as Sunnah muakkadah (strongly emphasized) — meaning habitually skipping them without reason is disliked. The Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools classify them as mustahabb (recommended but not emphasized). All four agree on one point: there are no voluntary Sunnah prayers after Asr. Praying nafl between Asr and Maghrib is generally discouraged.

How Do the Four Madhabs Compare on Asr Rakats?

MadhabPre-Asr SunnahFardPost-Asr SunnahStatus of Pre-Asr Sunnah
Hanafi4 rakats4 rakatsNoneStrongly emphasized (muakkad)
Maliki4 rakats4 rakatsNoneRecommended (mustahabb)
Shafi'i4 rakats4 rakatsNoneRecommended (mustahabb)
Hanbali4 rakats4 rakatsNoneRecommended (mustahabb)

The 4 Fard rakats are an absolute point of consensus — there is no disagreement across any Sunni school of law. For the complete rakat picture across all five daily prayers, our guide on how many rakats are in each prayer gives the full breakdown in one reference table. Is Asr the "Middle Prayer" the Quran Mentions?

Yes — and that designation matters more than most people realize. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah:

حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَىٰ وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ

"Guard strictly the five obligatory prayers — especially the middle prayer — and stand before Allah with devotion." — (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:238)

The vast majority of scholars identify al-salat al-wusta (الصَّلَاةُ الْوُسْطَى) as Asr. The Prophet ﷺ removed any ambiguity during the Battle of the Trench: "They occupied us from the middle prayer — Asr — until the sun set." (Sahih al-Bukhari 596)

That singular designation means Asr is not simply one of five equal obligations. It is the prayer Allah specifically chose to call out by name for protection — which makes missing it, or barely catching its final moments, feel different from arriving late to Dhuhr.

When Does the Asr Prayer Time Begin and End?

The Asr prayer window is defined and calculable:

  • Start: When the shadow of any upright object equals its own height plus the length of its midday shadow. Prayer apps calculate this for your exact coordinates automatically.
  • Preferred window (ikhtiyari): From the start time until the sun begins to turn yellow — roughly 45 to 60 minutes before sunset, varying by season and latitude.
  • Valid but disliked (dharuri): From when the sun yellows until just before sunset. The prayer remains valid, but the Prophet ﷺ described consistently delaying until this point as a trait of the hypocrite (Sahih al-Bukhari 553).
  • Prayer window closes: At sunset.

There is a minor scholarly difference on when Asr begins: the Hanafi school holds that Asr starts when the shadow is twice the object's height (not equal), which gives a later start time. All schools agree on the sunset end point.

How to Pray Asr: A Complete Rakat Walkthrough

Salat al-Asr is prayed entirely silently (sirr). Here is the full structure, including the optional Sunnah:

  1. Optional: 4 Sunnah rakats — Pray these before the Fard with the intention of pre-Asr Sunnah.
  2. Intention (niyyah): Silently intend: "I intend to pray 4 Fard rakats of Salat al-Asr for Allah."
  3. Opening Takbeer: Allahu Akbar (اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ) — raise hands to earlobes or shoulders.
  4. Rakats 1 and 2: Recite Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by an additional surah — all silently.
  5. After Rakat 2: Sit for the first Tashahhud (at-tahiyyat).
  6. Rakats 3 and 4: Recite Al-Fatihah only — no additional surah in the final two rakats.
  7. Final Tashahhud followed by Salawat on the Prophet ﷺ.
  8. Tasleem: As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah (السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ) — right, then left.

What Happens If You Miss the Asr Prayer?

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever misses Asr prayer is as if he had been bereaved of his family and wealth." (Sahih al-Bukhari 552)

Missing Asr is serious in the Islamic tradition. The correct response is immediate qada (makeup prayer): pray the 4 Fard rakats as soon as you realize you missed them, even if the next prayer time has already entered. This obligation does not expire — it carries until you fulfill it.

If the miss was genuinely unintentional — sleep, a forgotten time, an emergency — there is no sin on you. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, let him pray it when he remembers. There is no expiation except this." (Sahih al-Bukhari 597)

DeenBack's guide on building a consistent salah practice walks through practical strategies for protecting each prayer slot — particularly Asr, which occupies the most contested hours of the day. Demi Manifest's piece on post-prayer rituals explores what happens after you pray — grounding yourself so the rhythm of salah becomes the backbone of your afternoon rather than an interruption to it.

The quality that turns 4 Fard rakats into a genuine act of worship is khushoo (خُشُوع) — the attentiveness and heart-presence the Prophet consistently modeled. Our guide on what is khushoo in salah goes deeper into how to cultivate it specifically during the afternoon prayer when the mind is at its most scattered.

How Many Asr Rakats Does a Traveler Pray?

A traveler (musafir) who has covered a qualifying distance — typically around 48 miles or 77 km in the majority scholarly view — shortens Asr from 4 Fard rakats to 2 Fard rakats. This dispensation is called Qasr (shortening). The shortened Asr counts as a complete, valid prayer; no makeup is required.

Travelers may also combine (jam') Asr with Dhuhr: praying both at Dhuhr time (jam' taqdeem) or both at Asr time (jam' ta'kheer). These permissions are confirmed by authentic hadiths in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim documenting the Prophet's ﷺ own travel practice.

The 4 Fard rakats of Asr — and the 4 Sunnah that precede them — are among the most consistent acts of worship in a Muslim's daily life. Protecting them is not just about fulfilling an obligation. It is a daily act of standing before Allah with qunoot (قُنُوتٌ) — the devoted presence that the very verse commanding Asr's protection calls us toward.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rakats is the Asr prayer?

The Asr prayer has 4 obligatory Fard rakats, prayed silently. All four major Sunni schools — Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali — agree on this count. There are also 4 optional Sunnah rakats recommended before the Fard (Abu Dawud 1271), bringing the full voluntary and obligatory total to 8 rakats if you include the pre-Asr Sunnah.

Are there Sunnah rakats before or after Asr prayer?

There are 4 recommended voluntary Sunnah rakats before Salat al-Asr — not after it. The Prophet said: "May Allah have mercy on one who prays four rakats before Asr prayer" (Abu Dawud 1271). There are no Sunnah prayers after Asr; praying voluntary prayers between Asr and Maghrib is generally discouraged by scholars across all madhabs.

Is Asr the middle prayer mentioned in the Quran?

Yes. The Quran commands believers to guard the middle prayer (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:238), and the overwhelming majority of scholars identify this as Salat al-Asr. The Prophet confirmed it during the Battle of the Trench, stating Asr was the prayer the enemy had caused the Muslims to delay until the sun set (Sahih al-Bukhari 596).

When does the Asr prayer time start and end?

Asr begins when the shadow of any upright object equals its own height plus the midday shadow. The preferred window closes when the sun turns yellow — about 45 to 60 minutes before sunset. The window expires at sunset. Most prayer apps calculate this precisely for your location. The Prophet described delaying until the sun yellows as a mark of the hypocrite (Sahih al-Bukhari 553).

What happens if I miss the Asr prayer?

A missed Asr must be made up immediately upon remembering — there is no expiry on this qada obligation. The Prophet described missing Asr as comparable to losing one's family and wealth (Sahih al-Bukhari 552). Unintentional misses caused by sleep or forgetfulness are forgiven when made up promptly. The rule is simple: pray it as soon as you remember, no matter when that is.

Is Asr prayed aloud or silently?

Salat al-Asr is prayed silently — all recitations, including Al-Fatihah and any additional surah, are spoken internally rather than aloud. This applies whether praying alone or in congregation. Only Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha are recited aloud. Dhuhr and Asr are both silent prayers. This is a point of consensus across all four major Sunni madhabs.

How many Asr rakats does a traveler pray?

A traveler shortens Asr to 2 Fard rakats instead of 4 — a dispensation called Qasr. This applies after covering a qualifying travel distance, typically around 48 miles (77 km) in the majority view. Travelers may also combine Asr with Dhuhr at either prayer time. Both permissions are confirmed by authentic hadiths in Sahih Muslim and Sahih al-Bukhari.
