بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

عُمْرَة — Umrah — the lesser pilgrimage. It can be performed at any time of year, it is not obligatory in the way that hajj is, and yet for many Muslims it becomes one of the most transformative experiences of their lives. The rituals are fewer, the journey shorter, but the closeness to Allah that pilgrims describe — standing before the Kaaba, circling it in tawaf, drinking Zamzam — is the same.
What separates a spiritually focused umrah from a logistically stressful one is often preparation. This packing list is built to help you arrive in Mecca ready to worship, not scrambling for things you forgot.
What the Quran and Sunnah Say About Umrah
Allah commands: "And complete the hajj and umrah for Allah." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:196)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described the spiritual value of umrah in terms that are hard to overstate: "From one umrah to the next is expiation for what falls between them." (Sahih Muslim 1349) This is not a journey to take lightly, and preparing well is itself an expression of that seriousness.
For a detailed breakdown of the rituals themselves — tawaf, saee, and halq or taqsir — see the complete guide to performing umrah. Once you understand what you will be doing, this packing list will make far more sense.
Ihram and Clothing
إِحْرَام (Ihram) is both the sacred state you enter and, for men, the specific white garments worn during it. Getting your ihram clothing right before you travel matters — buying last-minute ihram in Mecca costs more and leaves you less time to ensure it fits correctly.
For men:
- One or two sets of white unsewn ihram cloth (a top wrap and a lower wrap, no stitching or hems)
- Sandals that expose the top of the foot — enclosed shoes are not permitted during ihram
- Regular clothing for before and after the state of ihram
For women:
- Loose, modest clothing covering the entire body except the face and hands — there is no specific ihram garment for women
- Comfortable, well-worn shoes — you will walk the circumference of the Kaaba seven times and travel between Safa and Marwa seven times
- A light cardigan or layer for the Grand Mosque, which is heavily air-conditioned
For both:
- Two to three changes of comfortable everyday clothing
- A lightweight jacket
- A compact laundry bag
Ensure your ihram cloth and all intended clothing are washed and completely free of scent before you enter the state of ihram. Perfume on the body or clothing during ihram is not permitted.
Documents and Money
Lose your documents in Mecca and your trip becomes a visa and embassy problem. Prepare these meticulously.
Required documents:
- Original passport (valid for at least six months beyond your return date)
- Umrah visa (now often issued digitally — have a printed copy and a digital backup)
- Return flight confirmation
- Hotel booking confirmation
- Travel insurance documents
Money:
- Saudi riyals in cash for local purchases, food, and transport
- A bank card for larger payments and emergencies
- A money belt or secure inner pocket — large crowds are a pickpocket environment
Identification card:
Write your name, hotel address, phone number, and the contact number of your travel group on a laminated card. Wear it on a lanyard under your outer layer. If you become separated from your group — which happens, especially during peak hours — this card is what helps strangers help you.
Health and Medications
Umrah is physically demanding even if the rituals are fewer than hajj. The combination of heat, unfamiliar food, long periods of walking, and close proximity to pilgrims from around the world creates real health risks.
Medications to pack:
- All regular prescribed medications, plus a two-week buffer beyond what you expect to need
- Oral rehydration sachets — staying hydrated in the Mecca heat requires active effort
- Paracetamol and ibuprofen
- Antidiarrheal medication
- Antihistamines
- Blister plasters and moleskin padding — blisters after the saee are a genuine rite of passage for unprepared pilgrims
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+) for outdoor portions of the journey
Carry all medication in your hand luggage. Never put essential medications in checked bags that may be delayed or lost.
Toiletries for Ihram
During the state of ihram, all scented products applied to the body are forbidden. This prohibition extends to scented soap, shampoo, deodorant, and any product with perfume.
Unscented products to pack:
- Unscented bar soap or body wash
- Unscented shampoo and conditioner
- Unscented deodorant or antiperspirant
- Unscented moisturiser — the dry Mecca air affects skin noticeably
- Toothbrush and toothpaste (both are permitted during ihram)
- Miswak — lightweight, natural, and deeply connected to the Sunnah
Other essentials:
- Nail clippers — trim nails before entering ihram; cutting nails during the sacred state is forbidden
- Quick-dry microfibre towels
- Feminine hygiene products if applicable
Prepare all unscented toiletries at home before you travel. Do not assume you will find the right unscented products in Mecca quickly or cheaply.
Spiritual Essentials
These are often the last things pilgrims think about and the first things they wish they had prepared better.
Quranic and dua materials:
- A pocket Quran — there is tremendous reward in reciting in the Grand Mosque
- A dua card with the key supplications: the talbiyah upon entering ihram, the dua upon seeing the Kaaba for the first time, supplications for each circuit of tawaf, and the dua for drinking Zamzam
- Learn about the spiritual history of Zamzam water before you arrive — it deepens the experience of drinking it
Technology:
- A portable power bank, fully charged
- Charging cable and international adapter (Type G or Type F plugs for Saudi Arabia)
- Your hotel address saved offline, not just in a live map application
Never lose track of your umrah duas
DeenUp includes supplications for tawaf, drinking Zamzam, seeing the Kaaba, and every moment of your umrah — with Arabic text, transliteration, and translation.

Umrah trips are typically shorter than hajj, which means you have less room for excess. The lighter you pack, the more mental space you free up for worship.
Leave behind:
- Jewellery beyond the basics — loss in crowds is common
- Clothing you are unsure about — pack what you know works
- Scented products intended for use during ihram
- Heavy or bulky bags that will slow you down during the sa'ee
The rule is simple: if you are not certain you need it, leave it.
Building Spiritually Before You Travel
A well-packed bag matters. But a prepared heart matters more. The Prophet ﷺ taught that the key to meaningful worship is النِّيَّة (al-niyyah) — the sincere intention. Before you pack a single item, spend time clarifying why you are making this journey and what you want to carry back from it.
Read about the importance of niyyah in Islam — it applies directly to how you approach every ritual of umrah. And before you arrive, reflect on what visiting the Kaaba in Mecca actually means, spiritually and historically.
For practical pre-travel preparation tips alongside the spiritual dimension, DeenBack's hajj and umrah preparation guide is a helpful companion. And for a personal reflection on what it feels like to stand before the House of Allah, DemiManifest's piece on visiting the Kaaba is worth reading in the days before you travel.
For pilgrims who have also done or are planning hajj, see our hajj packing list for the specific additions and adjustments that the longer pilgrimage requires.
Signs You Are Ready to Travel
You have done the preparation right when:
- Your ihram cloth is clean, unscented, and fits correctly
- Your documents are in order and backed up
- Your medications are packed in your carry-on with buffer supply
- You know the talbiyah by heart
- You have reviewed the key duas for tawaf and saee
- Your shoes have been worn in
The logistical preparation is finished when you stop feeling anxious about what you might have forgotten — and you can turn your attention fully to what you are going to do.

What is the main difference between hajj and umrah packing?
Umrah packing is generally lighter since it has fewer rituals and no overnight stays at Mina or Arafat. The ihram requirements, however, are essentially the same.
How many sets of ihram should I bring for umrah?
One set is usually enough for a short umrah trip, but two gives you flexibility if one becomes soiled or damaged. Both should be unscented and free of stitching.
Can women wear perfume before entering ihram?
Women may apply perfume before entering ihram provided it is not visible on the skin when they enter the state of ihram. During ihram itself, perfume is not permitted.
What dua should I recite during tawaf?
There is no single mandated dua for tawaf. You may recite any dua, make personal supplication, or recite Quran. Many pilgrims carry a dua card with supplications for each circuit.
How far in advance should I start preparing for umrah?
Begin your packing list at least three to four weeks before travel. This gives you time to source unscented toiletries, confirm your documents are valid, and break in your walking shoes.
