In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Every prayer ends with the tasleem โ the turn of the head and the words of peace. For many Muslims, that is where the routine stops. What the Prophet ๏ทบ did immediately after, however, was just as deliberate: a set of adhkar so consistently practiced that his companions transmitted them with exactness across generations.
These are not optional extras layered onto an already complete act. They are the prophetic completion of salah โ a bridge from the focused state of prayer into the rest of the day.
What Do You Say After Prayer in Islam?
The authenticated post-prayer adhkar begin immediately after the tasleem: Astaghfirullah three times, followed by the peace supplication (Allahumma antas-salam), then the 33-33-33 tasbeeh โ SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar, 33 times each โ completed with a single phrase of tahleel. Ayatul Kursi follows. After Fajr and Maghrib, Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas are recited three times each. The full sequence is grounded in Sahih Muslim 591, 597, Abu Dawud 1522, and al-Nasa'i.
Why the Quran Commands Remembrance After Prayer
Allah says directly in the Quran:
ููุฅูุฐูุง ููุถูููุชูู ู ุงูุตููููุงุฉู ููุงุฐูููุฑููุง ุงูููููู ููููุงู ูุง ููููุนููุฏูุง ููุนูููููฐ ุฌููููุจูููู ู
"When you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, and lying on your sides." โ (Surah An-Nisa, 4:103)
The verse does not say: finish the prayer and return to the day. It says continue in remembrance โ in every position after. The post-prayer adhkar are the prophetic form this remembrance takes.
For the complete guide to how to pray salah, including the movements, recitations, and conditions of the prayer itself, that guide is the foundation this one builds on.
The Post-Prayer Adhkar: Step by Step
Step 1 โ Astaghfirullah Three Times
ุฃูุณูุชูุบูููุฑู ุงูููููู
Astaghfirullah โ "I seek forgiveness from Allah" ร 3
The Prophet ๏ทบ would say this immediately after making the tasleem (Sahih Muslim 591). Seeking forgiveness directly after prayer acknowledges that our salah, however sincere, is never entirely free of distraction. Returning to Allah begins here.
Step 2 โ The Peace Supplication

Allahumma antas-salam wa minkas-salam, tabarakta ya dhal-jalali wal-ikram
"O Allah, You are peace and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of majesty and honor." โ (Sahih Muslim 591)
Step 3 โ The 33-33-33 Tasbeeh
Complete with:

La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa ala kulli shay'in qadir
The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Whoever glorifies Allah 33 times after every prayer, praises Him 33 times, and exalts Him 33 times โ then completes with La ilaha illallah... โ his sins are forgiven even if they are as plentiful as the foam of the sea." (Sahih Muslim 597)
Step 4 โ Ayatul Kursi
Recite Ayatul Kursi (Al-Baqarah 2:255) once after every obligatory prayer. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer โ nothing will prevent them from entering Paradise except death." (al-Nasa'i, Ibn Hibban 2005)
This is among the highest-reward practices in the entire Sunnah per minute of time.
Step 5 โ The Three Quls (Three Times Each After Fajr and Maghrib)
Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas. After Fajr and Maghrib specifically, each is recited three times. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "They suffice you against everything." (Abu Dawud 5082)
Step 6 โ The Dua of Muadh ibn Jabal
ุงููููููู ูู ุฃูุนููููู ุนูููู ุฐูููุฑููู ููุดูููุฑููู ููุญูุณููู ุนูุจูุงุฏูุชููู
Allahumma a'inni ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni ibadatik
"O Allah, help me to remember You, thank You, and worship You well." โ (Abu Dawud 1522)
The Prophet ๏ทบ held the hand of Muadh ibn Jabal and said: "I love you, so do not ever miss saying this after every prayer." (Abu Dawud 1522) The word "do not miss" is deliberate โ it is not a suggestion.

Building the Post-Prayer Adhkar Habit
The most reliable approach is to treat the adhkar as structurally attached to salah โ not a separate practice you do if time allows.
Stay seated after the tasleem. The moment you stand up, you are back in the flow of the day. Remaining on the prayer mat, even briefly, creates a container for the post-prayer adhkar that feels natural rather than like a second task grafted on.
Start with the tasbeeh and Ayatul Kursi. If the full sequence feels like too much at first, these two cover the most widely transmitted rewards and take under three minutes combined. Build from there over two or three weeks.
Count on your fingers. The Prophet ๏ทบ counted the tasbeeh on his fingers (Abu Dawud 1502). This is not a limitation โ it is an anchor. Physical counting keeps the recitation present rather than automatic.
Treat the Muadh dua as non-optional. Because the Prophet ๏ทบ explicitly told Muadh not to miss it, treating it as required builds the strongest habit signal. It is one short sentence โ there is no logistical reason to skip it.
For the broader context of daily remembrance beyond post-prayer adhkar, our guide to adhkar after salat covers the full recommended sequence in detail. And for the morning adhkar in Islam that follow directly from post-Fajr practice, that guide extends this into the morning routine.

Common Mistakes in Post-Prayer Adhkar
Rushing through the count. The adhkar are not a speed exercise. Each SubhanAllah is a statement โ glory to Allah, an acknowledgment of His transcendence. Reciting them at a pace where the meaning disappears defeats their purpose.
Stopping after the tasbeeh. Many Muslims have the 33-33-33 habit but skip Ayatul Kursi, despite it carrying the single most significant promise attached to any post-prayer act. Add it directly after the 99th count.
Treating them as optional on busy days. The Prophet ๏ทบ told Muadh not to miss the dua โ the framing is not "try if you can" but "do not miss." What is treated as optional tends to be the first thing cut.
Standing up too quickly after the tasleem. Even thirty seconds remaining on the prayer mat after the tasleem creates the mental shift that makes the transition into adhkar feel continuous.
Closing
The prayer does not fully end with the tasleem โ it ends with the remembrance the Prophet ๏ทบ always returned to immediately after. The tasbeeh, the peace supplication, Ayatul Kursi, the Muadh dua: these are not additions to salah. They are its completion.
Start tomorrow after Fajr. Stay on the prayer mat. Say Astaghfirullah three times. Then the peace supplication. Then SubhanAllah 33 times. Let that be enough for one day โ and the rest will follow.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do you say immediately after the salah tasleem?
After the tasleem, the Prophet ๏ทบ said Astaghfirullah three times, then recited the peace supplication: Allahumma antas-salam wa minkas-salam tabarakta ya dhal-jalali wal-ikram โ O Allah, You are peace and from You comes peace, blessed are You, O Possessor of majesty and honor (Sahih Muslim 591).
How many times is the tasbeeh after prayer?
The post-prayer tasbeeh is SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 33 times โ 99 in total โ completed with La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah (Sahih Muslim 597). The Prophet ๏ทบ said whoever recites this after every prayer will have sins forgiven even if they are as plentiful as the foam of the sea.
Should I read Ayatul Kursi after every prayer?
Reading Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer is a strongly recommended Sunnah. The Prophet ๏ทบ said whoever recites it after every fard prayer, nothing prevents them from entering Paradise except death (al-Nasa'i, reported in Ibn Hibban 2005). It is eight short lines and takes under a minute to recite.
Can I make personal dua after salah?
Personal dua after salah is one of the most valued times for supplication. The Prophet ๏ทบ said the dua most likely to be heard is in the last third of the night and after the obligatory prayers (Tirmidhi 3499). Remain seated, raise your hands, and ask Allah for what you need before standing.
What is the dua the Prophet ๏ทบ taught Muadh ibn Jabal?
The Prophet ๏ทบ held Muadh's hand and said: I love you, so do not miss saying after every prayer: Allahumma a'inni ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni ibadatik โ O Allah, help me to remember You, thank You, and worship You well (Abu Dawud 1522). It is among the most concise and comprehensive post-prayer supplications.
Do I read the three Quls after every prayer?
The three Quls โ Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas โ are recommended once after each prayer. After Fajr and Maghrib specifically, they are recited three times each according to transmitted practice (Abu Dawud 5082). This routine provides daily spiritual protection against harm, envy, and whispered doubt.
How long does the full post-prayer adhkar routine take?
The core post-prayer adhkar โ Astaghfirullah, the peace supplication, the 33-33-33 tasbeeh, and Ayatul Kursi โ takes between three and five minutes. Adding the Muadh dua and the three Quls brings the total to about seven minutes. Starting with just the tasbeeh and Ayatul Kursi is a sustainable entry point for beginners.
