Step-by-step guide to performing Asr prayer with correct rakats and recitations

Of all five daily prayers, Asr tends to be the one people miss most often. The workday is in full swing, meetings run late, school hours collide — and before you know it, the afternoon has slipped past. If that describes your experience, you are not alone, and the fact that you are looking up how to pray Asr properly is itself a meaningful step.

How Do You Pray Asr Prayer?

Asr prayer consists of 4 obligatory (fard) rakats, all performed silently. It begins when the shadow of any upright object equals its own length (plus its midday shadow) and lasts until sunset. The Prophet ﷺ specifically warned about missing it: "Whoever misses the Asr prayer is like one who has lost his family and property" (Sahih al-Bukhari 552). Many scholars also recommend praying 4 sunnah rakats immediately beforehand.

Why Does Asr Matter So Much?

Allah سبحانه وتعالى singled out one prayer for special emphasis in the Quran:

"Guard strictly the [obligatory] prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah in devout obedience." — (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:238)

The majority of scholars of tafsir — including Ibn Masud, Abu Hurairah, and Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنهم — narrate that this "middle prayer" (al-salat al-wusta) is Asr. The entire surah of the Quran named after this time of day — Surah Al-Asr (103) — opens: "By the declining day, indeed mankind is in loss, except those who believe and do righteous deeds." The afternoon is precisely when we are most distracted. Praying Asr is how we reclaim it.

The Arabic word Asr (العصر) itself means "the time" or "the afternoon" — and Allah swears by it to make a point about urgency. It is prayed silently: no recitation is audible to those around you, which makes your internal focus (khushoo) more important, not less.

Step-by-Step Guide to Praying Asr

Before You Begin

Make wudu — ritual purification is obligatory before any salah. If you are unsure of the steps, see our complete guide on how to perform wudu.

Face the Qiblah — turn to face the direction of the Ka'bah in Mecca. Apps can help locate it, or orient yourself toward the northeast if you are in North America, northwest if in Australia, and west if in most of sub-Saharan Africa.

Set your intention (niyyah) — say in your heart: "I intend to pray 4 rakats of Asr fard for Allah." The niyyah is a matter of the heart; you do not need to say it aloud, though some scholars permit doing so quietly.

Rakat 1

Opening takbeer: Raise both hands to your earlobes (or shoulders) and say:

الله أكبر

Allahu Akbar — "Allah is the Greatest"

Lower your hands and fold them on your chest (right over left). Silently recite the opening supplication:

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ وَلَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ

Subhanakallahumma wabihamdika watabarakas-muka wata'ala jadduka wala ilaha ghayruk — "Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You; blessed is Your name and exalted is Your majesty; there is no god but You."

Then quietly seek refuge: A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim, followed by Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim. Then recite Surah Al-Fatihah silently, followed by a short additional surah (e.g., Surah Al-Ikhlas).

Ruku (bowing): Say Allahu Akbar and bow, placing your hands on your knees with your back flat. Recite silently at least three times:

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ

Subhana Rabbiyal Adheem — "Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent"

Rise from ruku: Say Samia Allahu liman hamidah ("Allah hears the one who praises Him"), then while fully upright say Rabbana lakal hamd ("Our Lord, to You belongs all praise").

First sujud (prostration): Say Allahu Akbar and go down so that seven body parts touch the floor: forehead (with nose), both palms, both knees, and both feet. Recite at least three times:

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى

Subhana Rabbiyal A'la — "Glory be to my Lord, the Most High"

Brief sitting: Rise saying Allahu Akbar and sit briefly.

Second sujud: Repeat the prostration as above.

Rise for Rakat 2: Say Allahu Akbar and stand up.

Rakat 2

Repeat all the steps of Rakat 1 (Al-Fatihah + another surah, ruku, sujud).

After the second sujud of Rakat 2, remain seated for the first tashahhud:

At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat.

Raise your right index finger when saying la ilaha illallah.

Rakats 3 and 4

Rise saying Allahu Akbar. In Rakats 3 and 4, recite only Al-Fatihah (no additional surah). Perform ruku and sujud as before.

After the fourth rakat's second sujud, remain seated for the final tashahhud — recite the full Attahiyatu above, then add the Ibrahimiyya (salawat on the Prophet ﷺ) and any duas you wish.

End with tasleem: Turn your head to the right and say Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah, then repeat to the left. Your Asr prayer is complete.

Building a Consistent Asr Habit

The practical challenge with Asr is not knowledge — you now have the steps — it is consistency during a crowded afternoon. A few approaches that work:

Anchor it to an existing break. Many people find that setting a phone reminder for 15 minutes before Asr time transforms it from an aspiration into a routine. The prayer itself takes five to seven minutes, making it one of the shorter mid-day commitments you can make.

Pray with others when possible. Congregational prayer earns 27 times the reward of individual prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari 645). Even a two-person congregation counts. If you work in an office, finding one other Muslim colleague who wants to maintain Asr together can be the accountability structure you need.

Make up what you miss — immediately. If Asr slips past, do not wait until the next day. Pray it as soon as you remember, before Maghrib if possible. The Prophet ﷺ made up missed prayers promptly, and scholars are unanimous that this is obligatory.

For deeper reading on prayer focus, see what is khushoo in salah and the importance of congregational prayer. Building the broader routine around prayer is well covered at DeenBack's guide to daily dhikr habits, and for integrating prayer into a purposeful daily structure, the Demi Manifest piece on post-prayer rituals offers practical guidance.

Common Mistakes in Asr Prayer

Rushing the ruku and sujud. Each position requires tuma'ninah — stillness. Your joints must settle fully before moving on. The Prophet ﷺ told a man who prayed hastily: "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed" (Sahih al-Bukhari 793). Three deliberate repetitions of the tasbeeh takes only a few seconds but ensures validity.

Reciting the surah aloud. Asr is a silent prayer. Unlike Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha — where parts are audible — every word of Asr is whispered internally. New Muslims sometimes miss this distinction.

Forgetting the niyyah. The intention does not need to be verbalized, but it must be present in your heart. Scholars agree that beginning a prayer while mentally distracted is problematic; a moment of conscious intention before the opening takbeer anchors the prayer properly.

Missing the first tashahhud. The sitting after Rakat 2 is obligatory (wajib in Hanafi; sunnah muakkadah in other schools). If you accidentally skip it and stand for Rakat 3, return immediately if you have not stood fully. If you have already stood, complete the prayer and perform sujud sahw (prostration of forgetfulness) before the final tasleem.

Common Questions About Asr Prayer

Can I pray Asr while seated? If standing is genuinely difficult due to illness or injury, you may pray seated. You may also indicate the movements of ruku and sujud with head inclinations. Islam does not impose hardship: "Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear" (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:286).

Does wudu break between Zuhr and Asr? If your wudu remains valid from Zuhr, you do not need to renew it for Asr. Wudu is broken only by specific actions (using the toilet, deep sleep, passing wind, blood, etc.). For a full breakdown, see how many rakats in each prayer and the asr prayer rakats overview.

What if I cannot find the Qiblah direction? Make a reasonable effort to determine the direction. If you genuinely cannot, pray in the direction you believe to be correct. Your prayer is valid in cases of genuine uncertainty, and you do not need to repeat it.

Taking It One Afternoon at a Time

The five daily prayers are the vertical axis of a Muslim's day — the moments when the world recedes and you return to what actually matters. Asr sits right in the middle of the afternoon rush, which is precisely why making it a non-negotiable habit matters so much. It says: no matter how busy this day is, Allah comes first.

Start with the 4 fard rakats. Add the sunnah as it becomes natural. Bring others into the prayer with you. Use the duas after salah — available in our guide on duas to read after salah — to extend the state of worship beyond the prayer mat.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rakats is Asr prayer?

Asr prayer consists of 4 obligatory (fard) rakats, all prayed silently. In the Hanafi school, 4 sunnah rakats are prayed immediately beforehand. In the Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools, the 4 fard rakats are the primary obligation, with additional voluntary rakats recommended.

When is Asr prayer time?

Asr prayer time begins when the shadow of any upright object equals its own length plus its midday shadow, and extends until sunset. Scholars recommend praying Asr early, before the sun turns pale yellow. Delaying Asr until the last moments without necessity is strongly disliked in Islam.

What do I recite in Asr prayer?

In all 4 rakats of Asr, recite Al-Fatihah silently. Add any short surah in the first two rakats only. In ruku say Subhana Rabbiyal Adheem three times; in sujud say Subhana Rabbiyal A'la three times. End with the full tashahhud, salawat on the Prophet, and tasleem to both sides.

Is there a sunnah prayer before Asr?

The Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on a man who prays four rakats before Asr prayer" (Abu Dawud 1271). Many scholars, especially in the Hanafi school, strongly recommend these 4 sunnah rakats before Asr. Other madhabs consider 2 or 4 rakahs before Asr praiseworthy voluntary prayer.

What happens if I miss Asr prayer?

A missed Asr prayer must be made up (qada) immediately. The Prophet ﷺ warned that "Whoever misses the Asr prayer is like one who has lost his family and property" (Sahih al-Bukhari 552). Unintentionally missed prayers require prompt makeup; intentional abandonment requires sincere tawbah and qada.

Can Asr and Zuhr be combined?

Combining Zuhr and Asr is permitted during travel. According to Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali scholars, it is also permitted in cases of genuine hardship or illness. The Hanafi school generally restricts combining to travel only. Consult a qualified scholar for your specific situation.

Why is Asr called the middle prayer?

Many scholars identify the "middle prayer" (salat al-wusta) in Quran 2:238 as Asr, based on hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari. Asr falls between the morning prayers (Fajr, Zuhr) and the evening prayers (Maghrib, Isha), placing it at the midpoint of the daily cycle and at the busiest point of the day.
