اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ

When to recite it: Every morning, every evening, before sleep, and after every obligatory prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi before going to sleep, Allah will appoint a guardian over him and shaytan will not come near him until morning." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5010)

2. The Three Quls — Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas

Al-mu'awwidhatain (the two verses of refuge) — Surah Al-Falaq (113) and Surah An-Nas (114) — form the core Prophetic protection against external harm. Together with Surah Al-Ikhlas (112), these three short surahs are recited as a set.

3. Protection From All Creatures

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

A'udhu bi kalimati Allahi at-tammati min sharri ma khalaq

"I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created."

This short formula covers every possible source of harm — animal, human, jinn, and unseen. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever recites this upon arriving at a place will be protected from all harm until they leave (Sahih Muslim 2708). بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ

Bismillahi-lladhi la yadurru ma'a ismihi shay'un fi al-ardi wa la fi al-sama'i wa huwa al-Sami'u al-'Alim

"In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing in the earth or heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever says this three times in the morning will not be afflicted by any sudden calamity until evening, and whoever says it three times in the evening will not be afflicted until morning." (Abu Dawud 5088, Tirmidhi 3388)

5. Protection From the Evil Eye

The evil eye (al-'ayn) is affirmed in authentic hadith. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The evil eye is real, and if anything were to overtake divine decree, it would be the evil eye." (Sahih Muslim 2188). The specific Prophetic dua for protection from it is:

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ
