Why Understanding Rakats Changes Your Prayer
Most Muslims learn to pray by following the movements — standing, bowing, prostrating — without fully grasping why the counts are what they are. When you understand the rakat of salat as a structured unit of communication with Allah, not just a physical routine, every prayer gains weight.
The word rakat (ركعة) comes from the Arabic root ra-ka-a, meaning to bow. That single act — placing your forehead below your heart in submission to your Creator — gives the entire unit its name. Five times a day, seventeen obligatory rakats anchor a Muslim to divine remembrance.
What Is a Rakat of Salat?
A rakat is one complete cycle of Islamic prayer. Each rakat of salat contains five sequential elements: standing (qiyam) with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah; bowing (ruku) with the back parallel to the ground; rising fully (i'tidal); two prostrations (sujud) with the forehead on the ground; and a brief seated position (julus) between them. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ established this structure precisely: "Pray as you have seen me pray." (Sahih al-Bukhari 631)
How Many Rakats Are in Each Daily Prayer?
The five daily prayers each carry a fixed number of obligatory (Fard) rakats, surrounded by recommended Sunnah prayers that the Prophet ﷺ regularly observed. The table below shows the complete picture.
| Prayer | Sunnah (before) | Fard | Sunnah (after) | Witr |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fajr | 2 | 2 | — | — |
| Dhuhr | 4 | 4 | 2 | — |
| Asr | 4 (recommended) | 4 | — | — |
| Maghrib | — | 3 | 2 | — |
| Isha | — | 4 | 2 | 3 |
| Daily total | 10 | 17 | 6 | 3 |
The 17 Fard rakats are obligatory for every sane, adult Muslim each day. The Sunnah rakats carry enormous reward. The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no Muslim who prays twelve rakats of Sunnah prayer daily, voluntarily, except that Allah will build a house for him in Jannah." (Sahih Muslim 728)
For a detailed breakdown of each prayer's window and rulings, see how many rakats are in each prayer.
What Happens Inside Each Rakat?
Qiyam (Standing)
In the standing position, reciting Surah Al-Fatihah (the Opening Chapter) is mandatory in every rakat. The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no prayer for the one who does not recite Al-Fatihah." (Sahih al-Bukhari 756) In the first two rakats, you add another passage of Quran after Al-Fatihah. Third and fourth rakats include Al-Fatihah alone.
Ruku (Bowing)
With hands on knees and back level, you say Subhana Rabbiyal Azeem (سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ — "Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great") at least three times. This act of submission is so central that the rakat takes its name from it.
Sujud (Prostration)
You prostrate with seven body parts touching the ground: forehead and nose, both palms, both knees, and both sets of toes. You say Subhana Rabbiyal A'la (سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى — "Glory be to my Lord, the Most High") at least three times. Each rakat contains two prostrations. This is the closest a worshiper comes to Allah in prayer, as the Prophet ﷺ said: "The closest the servant is to his Lord is when he is in prostration." (Sahih Muslim 482)
The Quran describes those who guard their prayers: "Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:238) — a verse our guide on Asr prayer and its rakat count explores in full.
Fard, Sunnah, and Nafl: What Each Category Means
Understanding the categories of rakats clarifies what is required, what is rewarded, and what is optional.
Fard (Obligatory): The 17 daily rakats are non-negotiable. Missing them intentionally is among the gravest acts a Muslim can commit. If missed due to sleep or genuine forgetfulness, they are made up as soon as possible. Never abandon a Fard rakat.
Sunnah Mu'akkadah (Confirmed Sunnah): These are the rakats the Prophet ﷺ almost never skipped. They include the 2 before Fajr, the 4 before Dhuhr and 2 after, the 2 after Maghrib, and the 2 after Isha. Our article on the benefits of Fajr prayer explains why the 2 Sunnah before Fajr are described as worth more than the entire world.
Sunnah Ghair Mu'akkadah: The Prophet ﷺ prayed these sometimes but not consistently — such as the 4 before Asr. Praying them is rewarded; skipping them carries no blame.
Nafl (Voluntary): Night prayer (Tahajjud), mid-morning prayer (Duha), and similar prayers are gifts you give yourself — moments of private connection with Allah beyond what is required.

Begin with the 17 Fard. If salah is inconsistent, the starting point is always the obligatory prayers. Pray all five, even if the Sunnah prayers are missed for now. Establish the foundation before adding the walls.
Add the 2 Sunnah of Fajr first. The Prophet ﷺ was more consistent about these 2 rakats than any others. They take less than two minutes and spiritually set the tone for the entire day.
Learn what you are reciting. A rakat where you understand Surah Al-Fatihah feels entirely different from one where the words pass without meaning. Our guide on how to pray salah step by step covers not just the movements but the significance of each recitation.
Use consistent physical cues. Praying how to perform Fajr salah in the same place, on the same mat, at the same time each day turns a decision ("should I pray?") into an automatic behavior.

What the Rakat Teaches About Your Relationship with Allah
A hadith qudsi in Sahih Muslim 395 describes what happens when you recite Al-Fatihah in each rakat: Allah responds to every verse — "My servant praised Me... My servant glorified Me... My servant entrusted his affairs to Me..." — making the prayer a two-way conversation. Every rakat is a moment when the connection between the servant and Lord is unmediated and direct.
This is why the scholars say salah is not a duty to be discharged but a privilege to be savored. The question shifts from "How many rakats do I have to pray?" to "How can I arrive more fully for each one?"

What is a rakat in salat?
A rakat is one complete unit of Islamic prayer (salat). It includes standing while reciting Surah Al-Fatihah, bowing (ruku), rising, two prostrations (sujud), and a brief sitting. All five daily prayers are defined by a fixed number of these units, established by the Prophet Muhammad.
How many rakats are in each of the five daily prayers?
The five daily prayers have the following obligatory Fard rakats: Fajr has 2, Dhuhr has 4, Asr has 4, Maghrib has 3, and Isha has 4. This gives a total of 17 Fard rakats each day. Additional Sunnah and Nafl rakats are recommended but not obligatory for every Muslim.
What is the difference between Fard and Sunnah rakats?
Fard rakats are obligatory — deliberately skipping them is a sin. Sunnah rakats follow the established practice of the Prophet Muhammad and carry great reward; missing them is not sinful but is inadvisable. Nafl (supererogatory) rakats are additional voluntary prayers for drawing closer to Allah.
How many total Fard rakats are in all five daily prayers?
There are 17 Fard rakats across the five daily prayers: 2 for Fajr, 4 for Dhuhr, 4 for Asr, 3 for Maghrib, and 4 for Isha. Including the recommended Sunnah and Witr prayers, a Muslim who prays all the regular voluntary prayers completes approximately 40 or more rakats daily.
What happens if I make a mistake in rakat count?
If you are unsure how many rakats you have prayed, assume the lower number and complete the prayer accordingly. At the end, perform two extra prostrations called sujud al-sahw (prostrations of forgetfulness) before giving salam. This corrects the prayer without it needing to be fully repeated.
Can women and men pray the same number of rakats?
Yes. The rakat counts for all five daily prayers are identical for men and women. Both are obligated to pray 17 Fard rakats daily. Women are not required to attend Friday Jummah prayer at a mosque but may do so, and they pray all the same prayers with the same rakat structure.
What is the minimum recitation required in each rakat?
Every rakat requires Surah Al-Fatihah as the minimum recitation in the standing position. In the first two rakats of most prayers, an additional surah or Quranic passage is recited after Al-Fatihah. The third and fourth rakats include only Al-Fatihah. Bowing and prostration each require at least one dhikr phrase.
