Azkar after prayer — complete post-salah dhikr sequence with Arabic and transliteration

Finishing salah and immediately standing up to leave is one of the most common habits among Muslims who have never been taught what comes next. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did not stand up after salah. He sat, and he remembered.

The azkar (أذكار) after prayer — the remembrances recited following every obligatory salah — are among the most consistently narrated acts in the authentic sunnah. They form a brief, structured sequence that takes under three minutes and carries rewards described in the hadith as effacing sins to the level of sea foam.

What Are the Azkar After Prayer in Islam?

The post-prayer azkar are a sequence of supplications and remembrances narrated in Sahih Muslim and Sahih al-Bukhari, recited immediately after the final taslim of each obligatory salah. The core sequence consists of: Istighfar three times, the salam supplication to Allah, 33 repetitions each of Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar (totalling 99), and the tahlil statement completing the hundred. Ayat al-Kursi is added once after the core sequence. The entire practice is narrated from the Prophet ﷺ in multiple authentic chains and is considered a confirmed sunnah after every fard prayer.

The Complete Azkar Sequence: Arabic and Counts

Step 1 — Istighfar (Immediately After Taslim)

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ

Astaghfirullah

"I seek forgiveness from Allah." — recite 3 times

Then say once:

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلَامُ وَمِنْكَ السَّلَامُ تَبَارَكْتَ يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ

Allahumma antas-salam wa minkas-salam tabarakta ya dhal-jalali wal-ikram

"O Allah, You are As-Salam and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honour." — (Sahih Muslim 591)

Step 2 — The Tasbeeh (Core Dhikr Sequence)

The Prophet ﷺ said whoever recites the following after every obligatory prayer, all their sins are forgiven, even if they were like the foam of the sea (Sahih Muslim 597):

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ

Subhanallah — "Glory be to Allah" — 33 times

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ

Alhamdulillah — "All praise be to Allah" — 33 times

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Allahu Akbar — "Allah is the Greatest" — 33 times

Then complete the hundred with this single statement once:

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd wa huwa ala kulli shay'in qadir

"There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is over all things competent." — (Sahih Muslim 597)

Step 3 — Ayat al-Kursi

Recite Ayat al-Kursi (Al-Baqarah 2:255) once. A hadith narrated by Abu Umamah states that whoever recites it after every obligatory prayer, nothing prevents him from entering Jannah except death — narrated by al-Nasai and classified as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih al-Jami 6464.

Why These Azkar Are Structured This Way

The Opening Istighfar and Salam Dua

The sequence begins with seeking forgiveness, then praising Allah as the source of peace. The Prophet ﷺ explained this order: salah is a conversation between the servant and Allah. Ending with Istighfar acknowledges that our worship falls short of what Allah deserves, and that the prayer itself needs Allah's forgiveness to be accepted. The salam supplication then shifts from asking to affirming — Allah IS As-Salam, the perfection the salah was meant to reach toward.

The Tasbeeh and Its Reward

The three dhikr — Subhanallah (transcendence), Alhamdulillah (gratitude), Allahu Akbar (greatness) — cover the three fundamental orientations of the heart toward Allah. Combined, they are called the musabbihat (glorifications). The Prophet ﷺ also taught that this tasbeeh is the wealth of the believer, saying it in Sahih al-Bukhari 5362 that the daughter of Ali used these counts as an alternative to asking for a servant. The thirty-three–thirty-three–thirty-four count with the tahlil completion totals one hundred, a symbolically complete number in the Islamic tradition.

Ayat al-Kursi: The Jannah Connection

The hadith connecting Ayat al-Kursi to Jannah after every prayer is extraordinary in its directness. It says the ONLY barrier remaining between the reciter and Jannah is death itself. Many scholars describe this as one of the most motivating ahadith for consistent post-prayer practice — the reward is not vague spiritual benefit but a specific nearness to the ultimate goal.

How to Build the Post-Prayer Azkar Habit

Knowing the azkar is the beginning; reciting them consistently after every prayer is the goal. Here is how to build the habit:

  • Stay seated after taslim. The physical act of remaining in place after salah is itself a nudge — standing removes you from the moment. Decide before prayer: "I will sit for three minutes after."
  • Use finger counting. The Prophet ﷺ himself used fingers to count dhikr (Tirmidhi 3486). It keeps you present without needing a device.
  • Learn one element per week. Week one: Istighfar and the salam dua. Week two: add the tasbeeh. Week three: add Ayat al-Kursi. By week four, the full sequence is built into muscle memory.
  • Prioritise Fajr and Isha. If you cannot do the full azkar after all five prayers in the beginning, start with Fajr and Isha — the two prayers with the highest reported virtue for consistent post-prayer dhikr.

The adhkar after salat guide covers alternative narrations and additional optional adhkar. For the full set of daily dhikr beyond post-prayer, daily dhikr provides the morning and evening sequences that complement the post-prayer practice. If you want to explore why dhikr is central to Islamic spirituality, best dhikr in Islam covers the most recommended forms of remembrance with their scriptural bases.

Scholarly commentary on the spiritual dimensions of post-prayer remembrance is available through DeenBack's guide to daily adhkar after prayer and DemiManifest's exploration of post-prayer rituals — both complement the authentic narrations with practical habit guidance.

Common Mistakes in Post-Prayer Dhikr

Reciting mechanically without engagement. The counts matter less than the meaning. Saying Subhanallah thirty-three times as a rote exercise is far less than saying it ten times with genuine awareness of Allah's transcendence. Quality and consistency together are the goal — not speed.

Leaving for the next prayer only. Some Muslims treat post-prayer azkar as preparation for the next prayer rather than as worship in itself. The reward narrated in Sahih Muslim 597 is for reciting after the obligatory prayer — it is complete in itself, not a bridge to something else.

Skipping when in a hurry. The core sequence (Istighfar + salam dua + reduced counts) can be completed in ninety seconds. If time is genuinely short, shorten the tasbeeh counts but do not omit the category entirely. The dhikr after salah article covers abbreviated versions narrated for specific circumstances.

Common Questions

Should the azkar be recited before or after turning from the qiblah? Immediately after taslim, while still facing the qiblah. The salam dua (Allahumma antas-salam) is specifically established as being said before turning — narrated in Sahih Muslim 591 that the Prophet said it before turning to his congregation. The tasbeeh and Ayat al-Kursi follow in the same seated position.

Can women recite the full azkar during menstruation? Yes. The prohibition during menstruation applies to formal acts of worship (salah, fasting) and reciting the Quran with the intention of tilawah (recitation). Dhikr — including the post-prayer azkar — is permitted and recommended. During menstruation, a Muslim woman may recite the azkar at the prayer times even without having prayed.

Is using a tasbih (prayer beads) permitted for counting? Yes. Using prayer beads to count dhikr is established practice among the companions and their successors. Imam Ahmad, al-Nawawi, and the majority of scholars permit it. The Prophet ﷺ himself approved of some companions using pebbles for counting. Fingers remain the ideal method when possible.

Closing

Salah ends with taslim, but the connection with Allah does not have to. The azkar after prayer extend that connection for three minutes — from the formal acts of worship into the ordinary moment of your day. And according to the authentic narrations, those three minutes carry a weight far beyond their length: forgiveness like sea foam, Jannah with nothing left to wait for except death.

Sit for a moment after your next salah. Begin with Astaghfirullah three times. See what follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What azkar should I say after every prayer?

The core azkar after prayer are: Istighfar three times (Astaghfirullah), followed by Allahumma antas-salam (Sahih Muslim 591), then 33 Subhanallah, 33 Alhamdulillah, 33 Allahu Akbar (Sahih Muslim 597), and completed with the full tahlil statement. This sequence takes under three minutes and is the established sunnah after every obligatory salah.

How many times do you say Subhanallah after prayer?

You say Subhanallah 33 times after every obligatory prayer. Combined with 33 Alhamdulillah and 33 Allahu Akbar (totalling 99), and completed with La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahu al-mulk wa lahu al-hamd wa huwa ala kulli shay'in qadir, the Prophet Muhammad said all sins are forgiven even if they were as the foam of the sea (Sahih Muslim 597).

What is the meaning of Allahumma antas-salam?

Allahumma antas-salam wa minkas-salam tabarakta ya dhal-jalali wal-ikram means O Allah, You are As-Salam (the Source of Peace) and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honour (Sahih Muslim 591). It is said three times immediately after the final taslim, before turning from the qiblah.

What is Ayat al-Kursi after prayer?

Reciting Ayat al-Kursi (Al-Baqarah 2:255) after every obligatory prayer is established by a hadith narrated by Abu Umamah: whoever recites it after every obligatory prayer, nothing prevents him from entering Jannah except death (classified as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih al-Jami 6464). It is recited once, after the core azkar.

Is the post-prayer dhikr the same for all five prayers?

Yes. The core azkar — Istighfar, the salam dua, tasbeeh (33 Subhanallah, 33 Alhamdulillah, 33 Allahu Akbar) and the tahlil — are the same after Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha. Some scholars recommend adding specific morning and evening adhkar after Fajr and Asr respectively, but the core post-prayer sequence is uniform across all five.

Can I do the azkar after prayer silently?

Yes. The azkar after prayer may be recited silently or quietly aloud. The Prophet recited them in a low voice audible only to himself, unless teaching. Scholars agree silent recitation carries the same reward. What matters is that the dhikr is deliberate, not mechanical — meaning it engages both tongue and heart.

What if I miss the azkar after prayer?

Missing the post-prayer azkar does not invalidate the salah. The azkar are a confirmed sunnah (sunnah muakkadah) — highly recommended and regularly practised by the Prophet, but not an obligatory element of salah. If you forget or leave the mosque quickly, you may recite the azkar whenever you remember, though the reward for reciting immediately after salah is specific to that moment.
